Here is an ad for a local Lutheran church. What do you think about this?

Slinky Service
Each new participant receives a rainbow-colored Slinky. It is requested that you bring this Slinky to every worship celebration and use it as the Spirit leads. The rainbow Slinky reminds us of the promise that God attached to the rainbow. The flow of the Slinky reminds us of the flow of God’s Holy Spirit in the Christian Life we share. Remaining in pews is optional. Participants are asked to dance, sing, and move as the Spirit leads in the pews or aisles.

The link doesn’t work.

Doesn’t sound like my kind of Lutheran (or like 99%+ of other Lutherans).

Ooookay…clearly, that is very weird.

Lutheran’s usually have rather boring services, with Bible readings and hymns…no frills, because it doesn’t really fit with it. I remember falling asleep as a child whenever my Dad dragged me to a service…that and a numb backside…mostly sitting.

Sounds totally weird. But it might keep the kids entertained! 😃

That sounds like something someone recently came up with doesn’t it? I’m guessing now.

Nothing compared to what I discovered today about Anglicans communicating a dog.

giggle I admit it! Some of the stuff we do IS a lil weird…to the untrained eye!

Ever read the book The Bad Catholics Guide to Good Living? It’s extremely funny, reverent and loving. It’s chock full of funny saint stories and just general weirdness. I highly reccomend it.

I do remember there being a scripture in Paul describing us a “peculiar people” but, slinkys in church, dogs recieving communion makes one shudder to think what’s next in innovative liturgy. I’m thinking the slinkys are for the “kids” in the church. We had a elderly “grandfather-like” priest at one time who loved children and they adored him as well who tried to make liturgy “special” for them. He tried a couple of ideas out without consulting parents to see if they were good ones. At Easter one year, he passed out baloons to the kids with the words “Jesus is risen” on them. Funny thing was, there was one that got stuck over the altar which only descended on Pentecost Sunday at the words,“the Holy Spirit descended like a dove” when it nose dived right in front of Father’s feet. At Christmas children’s Mass he made the mistake of handing out kazoos and at a certain point exhorted the children to blow their kazoos to wish Jesus happy birthday. The problem being getting them to Stop!

PS I have friend who is Lutheran and I’ll have to chide her about this. She’s Wisconsin Synod

Oh my goodness, kazoos? That’s frightening.
I think kids have enough entertainment and toys in their lives already. When will they ever learn to sit quietly and listen if we keep eliminating places to do that? I think it takes away from the reverence for God and the service if everyone is encouraged to bounce around and not pay attention. And really, how long will a Slinky keep any child amused in this day and age?
If my 8 year old son can sit through mass without Legos, then I bet other kids can live without the Slinky.

Never read it…but I am tempted! Especially since my experience with Catholicism is very much from my memories as a kid growing up with it…and you know how the doom and gloom stuff somehow sticks out when you think back! I do love reading about weird saints…

According to the LCMS website (last time I checked), there are 250 different denominations of Lutherans worldwide. Wonder which denomination placed the slinky ad? According to the Handbook of Denominations, the number of Lutheran denoms in the U.S. have been reduced from 150 to 9 as a result of “consolidation, unification, and federation.”

O Lord deliver us.

Lutherans rock. Can’t judge 'em based on weird exceptions to the norm! 👍

Agreed. Go look at the thread I just started making this very point. I could care less if the Methodists in some obscure hick town start using Rubik’s cubes, doesn’t represent the whole body…

Our “Slinky Service” is a family friendly worship celebration that is open to God’s children of all ages. This worship celebration follows the Lutheran tradition and uses the latest technology for Bible presentations and musical offerings.

Well, it’s not what you would find if you visited the congregation I serve. On the other hand, I fear it is a sign of the times that a congregation feels it is necessary to do something like this to draw people in. Sadly, the prospect of hearing the Word and receiving the Sacrament doesn’t seem to do that. The influence of the secular world demands entertainment.

Could it be the LCRS? Lutheran Church Rainbow Slinky

Martin Luther would have had some serious problems with this, methinks.

I agree

Years ago we left the local parish in our town for the neighboring parish because the priest said he was going to Arizona to visit a mystic to get direction for the parish in the coming year.

Definitely not the Catholic norm.

California? Surprising.
