Yes, Lutherans are protestants. Actually they are a church founded by the Original Protestant, Martin Luther.

The word" protestant" is a general term used for many churches that came out of the Reformation of the Middle Ages, staring around the early 1500’s and later.

Many people deny that they are protestants, but still may be catagorized as such because of their disagreement with the Catholic Church.

“Protestant” is not a derogatory word to be used to demean, but is meerly discriptive.
