I was just over at Luther Quest Forum and they linked one of CAF’s posts about Luther Quest from 2005. One of them are coming over here to join, said he thought our forums were more difficult than theirs. He suggested others come here too, I believe to stop our Romish teachings.

They are still as anti Catholic as ever. One said he was banned because he posted about pre Vatican II. So be prepared for an onslaught from that board.

It is a shame as the Lutherans on CAF so far have been fair and charitable. They were making fun of Pope Benedict, the person said at least he could understand his German, because his English apparently is broken. I hadn’t noticed that when I heard him speak on EWTN as a Cardinal and since that time.

They really have a very boring forum, it is almost always just Lutherans who have the same thought processes, little debate or intelligent conversations. Many seem to be Pastors. I wonder if they also preach anti Catholic sermons.

The link to CAF stated that one Catholic thought that one of the Lutheran pastors was a friend until he went to the site and read what he wrote about the Church. He must of said one thing on CAF and another on their site.

I hope everyone will be charitable towards whoever comes over as we must always be good Christians no matter what is said. Remember Christ was persecuted and said we would also be persecuted for following Him. I think that we receive graces when we are loving towards our persecutors.

Hi Bernadette,

Its a good thing that they come, they may think they come on their own accord, but it is the Holy Spirit that brings them here to learn the Truth, wether they accept it or not it is up to them.👍

I am sure they will learn a lot. The more we see over here the better.👍

Bernadette,

I have read (not participated in) LutherQuest. I much prefer the tone of the discussions on CAF. That has much to do with why I choose to participate here.

It is nice to have a perfect example of what the OP said about the Lutherans who post here. Thanks for the compliment Pastor Gary!👍

First, thanks Bernadette for the nice words about the Lutherans here.

Like Pastor Gary, I much prefer CAF over other sites - like CARM and even LutherQuest.
Within both communions, Catholic and Lutheran, there are folks who, sadly, seem to be vested in perpetuating hard feeling and division. I pray the Holy Spirit overcomes this, and softens the hearts of believers to see Him in members of other Christian communions.

Actually I haven’t been on any Catholic websites that attack protestants. Although I go to one who attacks Catholics and the Pope, they are very unhappy about Vatican II.

I am sure that there are some Catholic sites against all protestants, but wonder if they are like the one I mentioned above and also deny Pope Benedict.

I realize that it really is just individuals who are so hostile, not their church per se and that those sites draw the same type of personalities. I also like CAF the best as most of the posters are much kinder and caring. Of course we do have a few who get out of bounds, but I see that as the minority.

I don’t know anything about LutherQuest but I’m surprised to hear that Lutherans have such a poor view of Catholics. Condemning another denomination is in extremely poor taste and immature. The pastors who participate in that nonsense should be ashamed of themselves. And they should know better! You could maybe expect that from someone less educated but not a lady or gentleman who is suppose to be representing Christ on earth. As Christians we should conduct ourselves the way we would if Christ was standing next to us . . . Because He actually is. Would they condemn other Christians or mock the Pope with Christ in the room? I bet they didn’t think about that.

Most of the posters there are of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. I too noticed that a good number are pastors. I did not see too many overtly anti-Catholic posts when I used to visit. The majority of threads considered internal debates and reflections. Where there was anti-Catholicism, it was usually a theological rejection of Catholic belief.

The posts I am referring to say things like, the Pope is the Anti Christ. In one post it stated that this is part of the doctrine of their church. They also throw around the words papist etc. I didn’t know they were Missouri Synod, I thought that Synod was closes to the beliefs of the Catholic Church and less evangelical.

Yes I agree they usually talk about internal debates. Actually they slamed one Lutheran minister who was highly regarded for attending an ecumenical service a few years ago. So they appear to attack their own also. My friend who is Missouri Synod was highly offended when that happened. I suppose all churches have malcontents within them.

I grew up with the attitude that each person has the right to make their own choices on which faith to belong to and try not to condemn anyone’s choice as in the end each of us must face God and account for our decisions and that includes me.

The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod tends to be more “conservative” (generally speaking) than the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Many of the posters/pastors on Lutherquest also describe themselves as “confessional” Lutherans, which means that they strive to follow the particular doctrines of Lutheranism as explicated in the Book of Concord. In many ways, the LCMS is closer to Catholicism than other Protestants (consider the Eucharist a sacrament, are more liturgical, have closed communion, and even some have confession), but in other ways they are like Luther in his denunciations of Roman teaching.

Honestly though, I have relatives who attend a LCMS church, and I get the feeling that the pastors one finds on Lutherquest tend to reflect a vocal element and not the norm in the LCMS.

Like many message boards you get the most diehard of the diehards and sometimes that means you get those with the strongest opinions formed with the least knowledge.

LutherQuest is indeed the hardest of the hardcore Lutherans, mostly from the Missouri Synod.

The schism in the Missouri Synod in the early 1970s, when a group of hardcore confessional Lutherans took over the Synod, has had profound ramifications for not only the Missouri Synod, but also for what would become the ELCA 15 years later, and even Catholicism and Orthodoxy.

The Missouri Synod has remained conservative and many in the LCMS remain suspicious of anyone who engages in any type of ecumenical activity - the furor over a District President’s (LCMS equivalent of bishop) appearance at an ecumenical post-9/11 prayer gathering is a reminder.

The “liberals” that were purged went on to become an integral part of the push to form the ELCA, and some of the farthest left from that group have been supportive of the most recent changes in the ELCA regarding sexuality.

The “evangelical catholics” left because they saw the writing on the wall that they would be deemed “too Romish.” Many went to groups that later merged into the ELCA, but eventually left the ELCA. Richard John Neuhaus, Jaroslav Pelikan and Robert Louis Willken are probably the most notable of that group which has gone from the LCMS to the ELCA to Catholicism/Orthodoxy.
