Which one do you not agree with?
For a Catholic, that is a bit of a loaded question. Like, ‘Are you going to stop beating your wife?’

The abuses that gave rise to the 95 Theses were very real. While the Church is protected from teaching error, Her individual members are not, save the sucessor of St. Peter. I doubt you will find anyone who would agree that everthing was just hunky dory and there was no need for reform; however, the primary issue at play with the Protesant revolution is that Luther and his followers attempted to usurp the Magisterial authority of the Church.

One of the biggest beneifts of that time was that the Church had an opportunity to clean house. She reaffirmed the same doctrines that had been taught since the beginning and cast out the new doctrines being propagated by Luther, et al. The fact that the Church has not changed one single doctrine or dogma is the greatest evidence that it was always intact. Protestant doctrine changes regularly, following the same spirit as Luther. If you don’t agree with it, change it or toss it. I will give credit to many Protesant today who are seeing the problems that arise when something that was supposed to be set in stone changes.

So the 95 Theses is important in understanding what one priest thought in 1517 and it sheds some light on the problems the Church was having with Her followers. But it is even more important in understanding the kind of havoc that one can bring to the body of Christ when prudence is left in favor personal desires.

I do love how Catholics refer constantly to it as “our church from the beginning” its funny
Im surprised there were not more ppl on this topic, basically what im trying to point out is what is not biblicaly sound in the 95 theses. I guess if you all want to shy away from this thats ok too

‘Which one do you not agree with?’ isn’t a whole lot to work with.

Luther wasn’t trying to make a biblical commentary (at least as far as I can tell). He was trying to point out the abuses he saw.

yea, this is why when the Catholics say the church has been the same from the begging that i can tell you thats simply not true. it got out of control and honestly too how are you going to call yourself a catholic without reading one of the most important and relevant documents relevant to it…
Thats like calling myself a creationists without reading Darwins book the descent of man and the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life

Ok, I’ll bite.

Which doctrine or dogma did we change?

Which one do you not agree with?
Number 5 The pope does not intend to remit, and cannot remit any penalties other than those which he has imposed either by his own authority or by that of the Canons.

Number 6 The pope cannot remit any guilt, except by declaring that it has been remitted by God and by assenting to God’s remission; though, to be sure, he may grant remission in cases reserved to his judgment. If his right to grant remission in such cases were despised, the guilt would remain entirely unforgiven."

Jesus told Peter and the other apostles “Whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven them; whose sins you shall retain they are retained.” He also gave them the power to bind and loose. What they bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and what they loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. This authority was not given only to Peter and the apostles but to their successors. Therefore, the pope can loose people from their guilt and God will stand by His promise.

These theses are Luther’s opinion but are not biblical.

define “out of control” … how many of the clerics in Luther’s time were actually selling indulgenses in a manner that was offensive and sinful? Do you know? was it 100% - 50% 10% ???

and exaclty how many of the faithful were ‘taken’ - tricked into buying salvation without true repentence and a firm resolve to turn away from their sinful behaviors … 100%, 10% …

Today the air waves are full of preachers who hawk this or that, asking for this or that contribution and who preach “prosperity” theology with thier own hands out stretched … they are not any different then those who mis-represented the Gospel and the authentic teachings of the Church in Luther’s day … How do you repudiate your misguided ministers?
