Why did Luther hate the Jews so much?

jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/anti-semitism/Luther_on_Jews.html

What shall we Christians do with this rejected and condemned people, the Jews? Since they live among us, we dare not tolerate their conduct, now that we are aware of their lying and reviling and blaspheming. If we do, we become sharers in their lies, cursing and blasphemy. Thus we cannot extinguish the unquenchable fire of divine wrath, of which the prophets speak, nor can we convert the Jews. With prayer and the fear of God we must practice a sharp mercy to see whether we might save at least a few from the glowing flames. We dare not avenge ourselves. Vengeance a thousand times worse than we could wish them already has them by the throat. I shall give you my sincere advice:

First to set fire to their synagogues or schools and to bury and cover with dirt whatever will not burn, so that no man will ever again see a stone or cinder of them. This is to be done in honor of our Lord and of Christendom, so that God might see that we are Christians, and do not condone or knowingly tolerate such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of his Son and of his Christians. For whatever we tolerated in the past unknowingly * and I myself was unaware of it * will be pardoned by God. But if we, now that we are informed, were to protect and shield such a house for the Jews, existing right before our very nose, in which they lie about, blaspheme, curse, vilify, and defame Christ and us (as was heard above), it would be the same as if we were doing all this and even worse ourselves, as we very well know.

Second, I advise that their houses also be razed and destroyed. For they pursue in them the same aims as in their synagogues. Instead they might be lodged under a roof or in a barn, like the gypsies. This will bring home to them that they are not masters in our country, as they boast, but that they are living in exile and in captivity, as they incessantly wail and lament about us before God.

From what I understand, he invited the Jews to join in his new church, since both of them rejected Catholicism. The Jewish community politely declined, and from that point forward, he displayed the type of attitude you see above.

I agree, but it went from disagreement to hatred. The Nazis did to the Jews exactly what Luther said to do to them.

Why did Luther hate the Jews so much?
Hi

Since the Jews of the time of Jesus, cruelly put him on Cross and inflicted injuries to him, so Luther’s sentiments could be understood in that context.

Present day Jews are not in the same position, so they should not be hated for a crime committed by their elders centuries ago.

It is another matter that GodAllahYHWH helped Jesus miraculously and Jesus survived a cursed death on Cross. If Luther had known this, I think he would have not hated Jews so much.

Thanks

**Some **of the Jews (play nice parrasurry) and the Roman authorities did put Him on a Cross.

And, Jesus died a creul horrible bloody miserable death on the Cross.
Yet, the Cross had no power on Him.
For He Is God
Christ has died, Christ is Risen, Christ will come again

It sounds as if Luther and Mohammed have something in common. Both thought the Jews would follow them and when they were disappointed, they quickly let their emotions get the better of them.

No. You keep on saying this and you’re wrong every time you do.

Jesus DIED on the Cross willingly and ROSE FROM THE DEAD!

By your denial of the death of Jesus, you also deny His Resurrection.

Mahomet (pblt) died and rots in the grave.

Jesus is coming again.

The Imam Mahdi is another name for the Dajaal.

I confess there is no God but Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and Jesus is God Incarnate!

If you put in broken english in the quote in the OP it sounds like something from Borat.

I have even heard modern day Lutherins refer to the Jewish people in horrible terms. My only question is if it may be more of a regional thing. Northern and Eastern Europe is notorious for its anti-semitism, including the last 75 years. Either way, there is no reason in Christianity to hate the Jewish people. In fact, we should not hate anyone.

Luther said nothing that St. John Chrysostom didn’t say before him.

Or several Popes for that matter.

Which Popes?

St. John Chrysostom lived in a time where the Jews were butchering and torturing thousands of Catholics, so he obviously had a better reason for his views than Luther did.

Actually, here is a link refuting that St. John Chrysostom spoke against the Jews. It says that the title of his sermons were mistranslated as against the Jews, where the sermons were actually against Judaizers. It also says that St. John “was quite admiring of the local Jewish community and their religious devotion and stamina.”

Similarly, a lot of ink has been spilt to set Luther in context and explain what he really meant as well.

But there was no mistranslation. Chrysostom believed Jews damned for their unbelief.

I feel sorry for anybody who hates anyone. When we hate we do not show off the love of God through us to help Gods sons and daughters. Weather Jew, Atheist, buddist, Muslim it dose not matter. We show love and the love of Christ. The LORD as spoken you must love your neighbor and love your GOD with ALL your heart and strength and soul. For the father is love and if we are with out love we do NOT know God.
Did you not know that Jesus HAD to die on the cross their is no reason to be sad but behold, rejoice and be glad for his willingly sacrifice has opened the door to all who follow him and love him to be saved. So, if we love the son then we love the father for the father and the son are one with the holy spirit he is worshiped and glorified with all praise and honor.
We must trust in the LORD for he is our strength our rock our fortress and he will never abandon ANYBODY. Sometimes the best Christian is a loving Christian who demonstrates the manifestation of Christ through them without speaking.
Speak when the holy spirit speaks and do the works of God that is pleasing to him. Which is LOVE not HATE!!!
May the blessings of the father be bestowed upon all and for all even to those in whom do hate. In the name of Jesus we pray! Amen!

Nonsense. The Jews weren’t butchering anybody in the late third century AD.

Chrysostom’s problem with the Jews was theological, as was Luther’s.

This doesn’t let either of them off the hook of course, but they were two peas in a pod, informed by the same attitudes and prejudices.

One, to your church a saint, the other an arch-heretic.

And yet, the Bible tells us that God hates the wicked as well as the deeds they do, and honors the man who hates evil doers.

God hates the wickedness the crimes we commit against him. He does not however Hate any person! He hates our evil FREE chocies and our sinful ways. blessed is Christ most high
