Lying about acquisition of dorm room a sin?

I am a freshman in college and also have a few medical disabilities. Due to the medical disabilities I have a dorm room with its own bathroom. Because it is so much nicer, people keep asking why they gave it to me. Other people were given rooms similar to mine just by the luck of the draw, so I always just say that I got mine by luck, too. Obviously that is not true. I just don’t wan’t my first impression with people to be about my medical problems, so I just avoid it. I want to be known for who I am and not the medical conditions that I have. Does that make sense?

Would this be a sin? And if so to what degree?

A sin? Why? Are the entitled to know your medical problems?
No.
So, they have no right to know and you have no obligation so say. You could say whatever you wanted but your excuse was perfect.

Your own bathroom!!! That must be SWEET!!!

Seriously though, no. Not a sin. It’s none of their business!!

Now what I do could be more of a sin…lol. I sometimes intentionally lie about my family history and tell it the way I wish it was, rather than all the nasty stuff that happened just so people won’t feel sorry for me. LOL

Like the story about how the power went out frequently so we’d all bring sleeping bags into the living room and tell scary stories or read books and creepy poetry to one another by candlelight with canned soup for dinner and fall asleep out there.

None of it’s true…not a thing, except the frequent power outages. But I like to pretend it was.

Classically, telling someone something untrue for the sake of deceiving them (lying) is intrinsically evil, and so may not be done under any circumstances. That does not, however, mean you need to provide someone with information they have no right to. I would try to reformulate your response in a way that is not actually a lie, but does not tell them about your medical problems either. Say “it’s just the room I got” or “you’d have to ask them!” Something along those lines.

I can remember my first dorm room nearly 40 years ago when I had to tromp down the hall to a ‘gang’ bathroom.

Please don’t confuse ‘private’ with ‘secret’. Your medical condition, whatever it is, is no one’s business but those you wish and need to share with. This is private, not secret. And no, not all secrets are bad, though we tend to think that way for some reason. For example, a parent might hide the key to a gun cabinet; that’s secret but not bad, it’s good.

I’m just glad you were able to find a dorm that could accommodate your needs. Best of luck with your college adventure!

Thanks for the replies everyone! I didn’t think it was, but I just wanted to make sure because it seems that I am asked at least forty times a day. I didn’t want to repeatedly sin. I still think I that I will revise my response a little bit like Aelred said. Thank you!

I’d second that response…“Just lucky, I guess” works too. Or, make a joke out of it, “Warren Buffet is my uncle, he ***bought ***me this bathroom.”
