Lying about returning a product

I bought some diabetes lancets the other day, but after opening the box I realized that they weren’t what I needed, so I returned them to the drugstore. I taped the box closed again. The clerk asked me if they had been opened, and I said no.
What I meant to say was the box had been opened, though none of the lancets had been opened or used. I’m feeling guilty because I lied about not opening the box. I’m wondering if there’s anything I should do now, or if I should just confess and move on?

From a point of view lying to something like that especially for a medical product could be considered tampering.If I were in your position I would come out clean because the legal liability could be absurd for something of minor moral impact. Here I am not debating the moral issue, that I think is minor, I am just paranoid about being responsible for something that is way out of my control.

The bolded part implies that the lie was unintentional. I also think that its likely the clerk was asking about the lancets themselves, since a taped box would make it pretty obvious the box itself had been opened at some point. I think you’re in the clear here.
