I just had a quick question regarding a small percentage of people in the Protestant (or any wing) of Christianity.

I’ve read and heard that some don’t have a problem with lying or at least manipulating theology, truth, facts, etc. when evangelizing to non-believers or members of other churches. It’s an “end justifies the means” kind of thinking.

Does anyone know what this is called or have examples of it? I’d like to do some research on it.

Please take note: I don’t think this represents many people in any wing of any church. I think it’s probably a very small minority. Please don’t read anything negative into what I have written here.

Thanks.

Unfortunately, many evangelicals tell outright lies about the Catholic Church in order to sway people to their Church. They have sinned against the commandment not to bear false witness. Classic examples are Jack Chick’s garbage. I recently heard the audio of Steve Ray’s conversion story and he said a dean at the Jimmy Swaggert bible college told him outright lies about the Catholic Church in a conversation and when Jimmy called him out on it, he knew he was lying but did not care. This is so pervasive in evangelical culture, it is scary. It is because many preachers are prideful and see their church as a business that needs to acquire new customers.
Satan hates the Catholic Church and when these preachers or others tell lies about the body of Christ, they are doing Satan’s work. They have been fooled by Satan via their own self-righteousness into thinking they are doing God’s work. What a tragic thing.
My husband grew up in the church of Christ denomination and it was a full time job for the preacher to spread lies about the Catholic Church. Once he did some research of his own…he felt so lied to and betrayed and kept from the truth of Christ.

In terms of lying to serve Christ…the only example in modern day I can think of is during WWII many priests and nuns hid Jews in monasteries and also created false baptismal documents for them so that they could lie about not being Jewish and perhaps be spared.

In NC we recently had a case of a baptist HS football coach and school principal lieing to the school team about taking them out to a steak dinner and motivational speach, only for the kids to find them selves in a church being talked into getting baptised.

I can’t comment on whether this is considered right or normal, I think some “well meaninged” people made a serious blunder. In the end you’ll lose souls lieing for Christ. People don’t like being lied to, it will turn them off from the truth.

Thanks. Jack Chick was kind of the type of modus operandi I was talking about. I’m not sure if it’s done out of complete ignorance or a twisting of theology.

Let me just say I hold no ill-will toward these people. I actually got saved at 17 from a Jack Chick tract. I feel bad for people who feel it’s okay to lie if it means bringing people to Christ.

Thats the thing about God…he can use even ugly things to draw you to him.
You may have gotten some half-truths about God…but here you are inquiring about the Church he established 🙂
Keep searching and studying…God has led you this far.
