Lying in Confession

I was discussing this yesterday and was unable to come up with an answer. We know that when someone lies in the confessional, the confession is invalid and therefore the entire thing must be repeated. Does this also apply if the penitent is re-confessing to the same priest to whom he made the original invalid confession? For instance, if someone were to lie in the confessional, feel bad about it, and go back to confession the next day with the same priest, can the person just confess the fact that he intentionally held back a mortal sin, along with the actual sin which he omitted, or must he go through the motions of repeating every sin which he confessed the day before?

My opinion is that simply admitting to lying and confessing the sin that was held back would be sufficient, as long as the priest remembers the confession, but I could be wrong as to the proper protocol. Any thoughts?

I believe that since the penitent lied, there was no absolution.

So, he must repeat all mortal sins again. It’s as if the first confession never happened, except for the additional mortal sin of sacrilege that occured.

If the confession was not valid then no sins were forgiven! He has to go through all the sins that he remembers again.

Your approach would be similar to say “she is a little bit pregnant”. She is or she in not!

In the case he simply forgot a mortal sin then he should bring up only that one to the next confession.

I know that no sins were forgiven. My question relates to confessing to the same priest. Since he already heard the entire confession the first time, is it necessary to repeat the whole thing?

Obviously if one is confessing to a different priest then the whole thing would need to be repeated.

Yes, he must re-confess. A priest is not allowed to maintain anything from the last confession. They try NOT to remember.
