Good points. I till see it as saying that a lie is in the category of “sinful,” but depending on the conditions as stated in 2484, it could be venial at best.I understand that surriter is trying to differentiate regarding the objectivitiy of the sin and that is fine, but even the catechism is not strident on the matter, consider this:
2483 Lying is the most direct offense against the truth. **To lie is to speak or act against the truth in order to lead someone into error. **By injuring man’s relation to truth and to his neighbor, a lie offends against the fundamental relation of man and of his word to the Lord.
2484 The gravity of a lie is measured against the nature of the truth it deforms, the circumstances, the intentions of the one who lies, and the harm suffered by its victims. If a lie in itself only constitutes a venial sin, it becomes mortal when it does grave injury to the virtues of justice and charity.
So in the case of the nuns lying I would have to ask what truth is being disotrted that would lead the killers into error, and also who it harms and what harm is inflicted upon the “victims” (those who are lied to who wish to commit murder)
