I recently lied to my teacher and I need some help. I forgot about my assignment over the weekend and I was going to let him know what had happened. On the way to his office I had every intention of telling him the truth. But when he asked me what the problem was, I blurted out that I had left it at home. I feel really bad about it, and I don’t know if there are going to be any chances for me to go to confession before Easter mass. Am I in a state of mortal sin?

For THAT??? Heck no.
All lying is sin, but just like other sins,
there are varying degrees of gravity to lying.
This lie, at least to all appearances, only affected your own dignity,
it did not bring serious harm to anyone else nor to their reputation.
It was done out of fear and feeling “put on the spot,” not out of malice or a desire
to do anyone any harm.
If it had been, that would be different.
But what you did, we’ve all done, or 99.5% of us. In fact, I’ll go so far to say if anyone other than a) Jesus, or b) The Virgin Mary, c) St. Joseph, or
d) St. John the Baptist
, claims that they have **never **told these kinds of lies then,
they are either very forgetful, or else, well, probably lying.

Just ask God for forgiveness. If you want to confess it, do so,
but this is not a grave matter. It is definitely venial, so a a true act of contrition
and receiving a good communion, will cover for this venial sin.
Just try to remember your assignments from now on.

👍

To lie is to sin.

But, you know that already.

Is your sin mortal?

No.

Should you confess it?

Yes, to relieve your conviction.

Meanwhile, have more compassion for yourself, without trivializing the lie.
