Macy's offends Catholics

I guess a lot of history is now off-limits for TV & movies. Can’t cover any period of American history when we had slavery (including the Revolution)-- makes the U. S. look bad. Or the “Jim Crow” age afterward. No historical movies about the Crusades (there goes “Kingdom of Heaven”). Nothing on the English occupation of Ireland. Or India. Movies about the Holocaust would make Germany look bad, so they’re out. Nothing on the expansion of the US westward; the treatment of the native Americans is certainly nothing we want seen. And Russia & China – probably can’t do ANYTHING historical there. No movies about Salem, makes the Protestants look bad. Ban “Cleopatra,” the Egyptians had slaves . . .
What about the Mafia inspired series “The Soprano’s”…? They sure were’nt worried about offending the Mafia. 🤷

Now we have “The Borgia’s”… So I guess the Catholic Church fits in the same category as the Mafia now. Great.

So then let as ban all fictionalizations. Taking your logic to its conclusion, then such movies as Patriot, Midway, any movie about Robin Hood, Gettysburg, A Man for all Seasons etc. Should also be banned. .
I never said it should be banned my friend. But if I recall correctly, I thought I heard someone say that the series might not necessarily be a “bad thing”. Which left me wondering…

Just saying I disagreed. 😉
Films are not for education, but entertainment. There is lots of entertainment that misrepresent history (American Outlaws and Young Guns come to mind.) As Christians we should expect to be persecuted in some way. Just ignore the series, encourage others to do the same. The worst thing we can do is draw attention to it. Shows like this thrive on the attention generated by controversy.
Don’t forget the more recent ones, like “Inglorious Bastards”. Completely fictional, completely violent and dealt with the Nazi’s… Another “bad” bunch.

I think you just need a thicker skin. Hollywood, bu its nature, will continue to make movies and TV programs against the Church. It is a fact that you will have to get used to. I suggest that you read Inter Mirifica for pastoral guidance.

Unless a mini-series on the caliphs were being run which highlighted that feature about them, it seems unlikely.

But c’mon, the caliphs were not part of Western civilization, and are pretty much unknown to us. Yet anyone who has taken a class in Western Civ has heard of the Borgias. And their infamy precedes even the classroom. I heard about Lucrezia Borgia and her poisonous ways as a sophomore or junior in high school.
What seems unlikely is Hollywood doing anything that puts Islam in a bad light, and certainly no window dressings in Macy’s showing turbaned Muslims with a sign saying “the original criminals.” And it’s not because Western Civilization was insulated from the Muslims either. The West was fighting the Muslims during the period of the Borgias right next door in the Balkans and Adriatic. Didn’t they teach you about the Ottoman Empire in your high school classes?

Anything which forces us to confront the misdeeds of our past has value.

This is because we won’t blow up their movie studios and stores.
