Hi everyone,

I got baptized when I was 10 and I believe I may have done it for the wrong reasons. I basically told God if he brought took care of my mum then I would get baptized. I was baptized under the Trinitarian formula. Is my baptism “valid” considering my reasoning.

Thanks.

Yes. There’s no reason why that would make a baptism invalid.

Still valid. We get so many questions about baptisms here, so I’m going to solve that problem, if it was done with water, with the trinitarian formula, and it was not from a sect that has invalid baptisms, like Mormons, you are fine.

It is probably not a question of the validity of the Baptism but rather a question of the efficaciousness of the Baptism. In his Summa Theologica, St Thomas Aquinas talked about how various forms of insincerity can sometimes hinder the effect of a valid Baptism but that once the insincerity was removed the Baptism produced its effect. See St Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica, Part 3, Question 69 (The effects of Baptism), Articles 9 and 10.

I’m not sure this is necessarily applicable to a ten year old, nor entirely necessary to bring up here. The OP sounds Scrupulous.
