Gen 1:26 And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth.
Gen 1:27 And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.
Gen 5:3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son to his own image and likeness, and called his name Seth.

Image and likeness can also be a reference to the fact that since God is all good, we human have the capacity for doing good things, even great things, and being a blessing to others. You may recall that we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ. All of us are called to holiness and humility, glorifying God by our actions. In this way, we can be “image” and “likeness”.

Also, like God, we humans, with the exception of the angels, are the only beings in the universe that possess intellect and will. We possess the capacity to know and to love perhaps not on the same level that God does but along the same modes.

So we are God’s ’ image ’ in that he has created us with an intellect and a free will. And he created us good, so we were images or reflections of his perfect goodness. Of course since we a an image, that means that we are similar to God in these ways, but we do not possess these perfections perfectly. Indeed we are pretty faint images, especially since the sin of our first parents and because of our individual sins.

Created in His image, but did not remain so.
With the fall, the very nature of man changed forever.
The Salvation Plan, and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, allows the hope of having that image and likeness restored so we may live with Him for eternity.
