Magic tricks are @MonteRCMS said show business and entertainment ,for which people pay for
to have a good time,so they know ,he’s up to some tricks.

what is lying ? ,well the definition is in John 8:44 You are from your father the devil, and you choose to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.Acts 13:10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the
Lord?
1 John 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true;

A lie is a lie B/W

It makes me wonder over the quote -
A fool - sayeth in his heart - there is no God
I wonder if a fool - has been tricked -
Tricked by evil !

Another way of looking at this is intent. If the intent of the action is to deceive, either by intentionally leading one to a false conclusion, or providing some untrue benefit, that’s no bueno. If the intention is to provide entertainment, with no intent to lead someone toward error, bueno.

Notice intent has to be measured. If you’re not intending anything wrong, yet a reasonable person could miss interpret what you’re saying or doing, well, not so good.

Common sense ain’t so common no more.

Why not just say you appreciate the offer but you can’t make it?

It’s not lying if the audience knows that they are being deceived…
They know the magician is tricking them, and the magician knows that they know. Where is the lie here??

But if a magician tries to convince them that he is using real magic, then it is a lie, OR if he is practicing sorcery, then that is still a grave sin. 2117 “All practices of magic or sorcery… are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion.” i.e. all magic is from the devil.

“Magic is the only honest profession. A magician promises to deceive you and he does.”

Sorry this is my fault. I categorise my thread wrong at the start. I’m not interested in the practical moral thing to do. I know what to do. I guess I’m after the philosophical questions behind all this.
What characteristics makes somethIng a lie and not a lie.
So those situations are meant to be thought experiments to test the basis of what you think constitutes a lie or not.

That, good sir, is creepy

How about this scenario. Is it a sin to lie down. What If I’m tired? 😉😋

Fair enough.
It’s a good question, because sometimes there is a fine line between teasing and messing with people and outright lying, or even just being cruel.

So for example so far I’m hearing two categories of solutions
  1. Magic is entertainment therefore the intent is not to deceive
  2. Magic is not even deception in itself because the audience knows in advance it is a trick.
So to test these theories I need to come up with hypothetical situations to see which one is right or maybe both are right.

Eg to test number 2
If someone does a magic trick on another person without telling them first they are a magician and that it was a magic trick, is that considered still a deception?

Yes, it’s deception, but what’s their intention?
to bring joy (good)
to get youtube views with the permission of the person (neutral)
to embezzle money (bad)
