Magisterium and Guardian Angels: what is the Church’s teaching on the tradition of Guardian Angels? Ian new to the site and new at using tools properly. I would like to know the origin of the tradition of Guardian Angels and more .
Thank you.

Thank you I have this book and will re-check to see if I can answer the inquiry: “Prove to me where this tradition began; has the Catholic Church spoken definitively on the existence of
Guardian Angels?”

I believe the Church has spoken definitively on the issue of the existence of Angels. I am not aware of a definitive statement that certain Angels are assigned to certain people (as I understand Guardian Angel to mean), but it is certainly a common belief within Catholicism that has been held by many prominent Catholics.

Perhaps someone else can point to something more definitive.

Yes, but correct me if I missed it, the CCC affirms the Church’s belief in Angels, but does not specifically address “Guardian Angels,” i.e. the concept that each person has an Angel assigned to him or her.

Wow, you are correct, sorry, missed that. That is certainly definitive.

I KNOW I have a Guardian Angel! He’s gotten me out of too many scrapes for me to doubt his existence.

🤔

I didn’t know that. However, this is #336 of the CCC:

[336] From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession.202 "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life."203 Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

The quotation is from St. Basil the Great.

I do love New Advent so thank you for posting it.

The above site has a lot of information about angels.

If you are not too well acquainted with the angels, keep in mind that they do not have bodies. At certain times, when they do appear to others they “put on a body” in order to be seen. (such as in Scripture). Also, artists have taken liberties to draw them as little babies with wings, when actually they are quite powerful.

As a general rule, for questions of this kind, the online Catholic Encyclopedia can be a good place to start.
You need to be careful with that.

The Catholic Encyclopedia is not an official publication of the Church. It was an early 20th-century reference work compiled for use in the US.

It is also quite old in parts (I don’t believe it was ever updated after it came out around 1907-1912) and some of it can appear to be at odds with the current Catechism. Probably not the part on angels specifically, but when it gets into some other topics, like “Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus”, issues can arise.

A person’s first stop should always be the official Catholic Catechism. The Catechism will likely have citations to other references for further reading, such as writings of past Popes or the Church Fathers.
If there is still a question after reading the Catechism, then maybe ask here.

I find this Catechesis on the Angels by st.John Paul II.great.
On guardian angels
Therefore the Church confesses her faith in the guardian angels , venerating them in the liturgy with an appropriate feast and recommending recourse to their protection by frequent prayer, as in the invocation “Angel of God.” This prayer seems to draw on the treasure of the beautiful words of St. Basil: “Every one of the faithful has beside him an angel as tutor and pastor, to lead him to life”’ (cf. St. Basil, Adv. Eunonium , III, 1; cf. also St. Thomas, Summa Theol . I, q.11, a.3).

It was also published as book by him but cannot find it’s english version.
There is also great book by Arnold Guillet-Novena to saint angels (also couldn’t find english version but maybe it exists), it speaks about 9 corrals of angels, explains every of them, and guardian angels specially!
I know I have guardian angel and he must be very busy with me…

I know I have guardian angel and he must be very busy with me…
Please God that when/if I get to heaven, among other things I want to thank my Guardian Angel for all the care, help and protection he has given me all my life.

And THANK YOU, dear God, for giving me Your sweet Mother to be my mother, Your foster-father to be my foster-father and for my Guardian Angel!

when/if I get to heaven, among other things I want to thank my Guardian Angel for all the care, help and protection he has given me all my life.
I’m going to tell my Guardian Angel I’m sorry for being such a jerk for about 3 and a half decades and thank him for his patience with me going around sinning all the time.

Thank you for this catechesis Reading it’s nourishing understanding for the first time has dilated my heart and given me new praises to sing.

Christ has risen alleluia!🎶🎶🎶
