What meanings did “magnificat” have to St. Jerome?

Verb:
Make (something) appear larger than it is, esp. with a lens or microscope.
Be capable of increasing the size or apparent size of something.

You’re forgetting one more sense: “To praise, glorify (someone or something, especially God).” 😉

Now, where does the word magnify come from? 🙂

magnificō (from magnificus “great, noble, august”)

(I) prize, esteem highly.
(I) praise, glorify, or extol.

Magnificat: third-person singular present active indicative of magnificō
 
Note that when I magnify something I don’t change it. However, I greatly improve my perception of it.
