The Magnificat was sung by the choir of the National Shrine during the celebration of Vespers in the Crypt Church of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as the Holy Father incensed the altar. This particular Gregorian melody I’ve heard before, I believe at Pope John Paul the Great’s Funeral Mass. Is this one of the normal settings of the Magnificat in Gregorian Chant? And does anyone know which mode it is? That is if it has one, I know certain chants, such as the famous Kyrie from the Mass of the Angels, have different numbers to distinguish the distinct settings of the musical melodies.
