:)Greetings!
I have been praying the Liturgy of the Hours and have become overwhelmed. I was thinking of subscribing to The Magnificat prayer magazine and was hoping to get some views as to it’s helpfulness and its being in accord with the Church as a whole. Any personal expeiences would be helpful. Does it help you in your prayer life, were you disenchanted for any reason? Any comments will be appreciated. Thank you!
 
I do not care for it because I prefer the EF Mass and try to avoid the OF whenever possible. If, however, a person attends the OF on a regular basis, then I can see where it would be useful.
 
If one is a weekday Mass goer, and will actually use each issue, then yes, it is a good publication.
 
Also helpful if you participate in Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration.
 
Yes, I highly recommend it for it’s ease of use, also for the prayers and reflections. The only drawback is the cost–it is rather expensive. I use it mostly for morning and evening prayers, and for Sunday Mass.
 
I really like it for it’s daily use and for Sunday Mass. I have an autoimmune disease that affects the strength in my hands and the smaller Magnificat is much easier to hold during Mass than the Missalette (spelling?). My husband holds the bigger book for songs.
 
I really like the Magnificat. It is very easy to follow the morning and evening prayers (there is also a night prayer). Even if you aren’t able to attend daily Mass, having the readings and reflections is helpful for private devotions or to read in Adoration. I imagine their subsrptions will go up when the new translation comes out and people are getting used to the reponses also.
 
I don’t subscribe any more since I received a gift subscription to Word Among Us, also a great publication with daily Mass readings, devotional reflection and topical articles that are simply excellent on a different theme each month. I like Magnificat for travel or to keep in my bag because it also has morning and evening prayer, (shorter, not full LOTH) saint for the day and devotional each day. I travel light and this way I don’t need my LOTH, bible missal. and it is a good size and readable, plus a featured art work on the cover each month. I will pick up the July issue at the bookstore for travel that month, and that is all I will need.
 
i really like magnificat i use it everyday. i also take it with me when on holiday its small enough to put in handbag . i also find it helpful to learn about the saints. The meditation each day helps me to focus and apply my faith to daily living.🙂
 
I had a subscription to it for a while, but I did not renew it again. The price was my main deciding factor. For the price of 1 year of Magnificat I was able to buy a very nice leather bound, zipper cased Christian Prayer book. I have the Morning & Evening prayers applications on my iPhone, which I enjoy because I can listen to it on my way to work in the morning, and I also use them at home because being able to follow along helps me to learn how to find my way around in the book. For short devotionals, I get a little booklet that they have at our parish called “Living Faith” that is 3 months worth of daily devotionals and it only costs a couple of dollars. Magnificat is a very nice publication, but I preferred to spend the money on something I can use over and over rather than being so date specific.

I do enjoy the other Magnificat publications like the Lenten Companion, Advent Companion, and the Rosary Companion.
 
I was a ‘charter subscriber’ when it first came out. When I used to go to daily OF Mass, I would use it instead of the missalette.

Now that I go to the EF Mass on Sunday only, I don’t subscribe to it anymore. The cost is one of the factors against renewing it.

I liked the ‘Saints of Yesterday and Today’ sections at the end of each day, and oftentimes the artwork was nice.

In 2002, I went to a ‘Gloria Congress’ that Magnificat put on in New York City. I saw the ‘people behind the scenes’ who put it out. And I even got to talk to one or two of them, too-one was a Benedictine nun from Colorado, Sister Genevieve Glen. She wrote words for a ‘tribute hymn’ in memory of the 9/11 victims, survivors and rescuers, to the tune of ‘Eternal Father, Strong To Save’ (The ‘Navy Hymn’). I complimented her on her work, and she responded with, ‘It took a lot of prayer, and a lot of tears.’
 
the one problem with Morning and Evening prayer in Magnificat is that it doesn’t match what is in the Liturgy of the Hours.
 
I really appreciate the in put. My husband does use the Word Among Us. But I need at least the Morning and Evening Prayers. Please keep your comments coming; they are very insightful and helpful:)
 
:)Me Again. I am very concerned to hear that the Morning and Evening Prayers are not shorter versions of the LOTH like I thought they would be. It was always very important to me to pray the LOTH as part of the “Prayer of the Church”. With the Magnificat, it sounds like I would no longer be part of that greater prayer which means lot to me. Please keep trying to help me with my quandry, all the info. has really made me think - and that’s a very good thing!
 
As other posters have said the magnificat magazine is very resourceful. I like The hymns and daily reflections as well as the order of Mass which is always in the center. I was also pleased that some of the propers for Mass are in Latin such as the Gloria, credo, sanctus.e St cetera
 
I subscribed to it as my birthday treat this year.

I like it, but it really would be better value if you use it by going to daily Mass.

In the UK edition at least, I don’t like the* Saints of Yesterday and Today*, because this section bears no relevance to the liturgical day. The saint covered will be saint such and such, but the actual liturgical day will be something else entirely. That is something I find very jarring. It is also not terribly interesting or deep. I do like the daily reflections or meditations and I like the short essays at the beginning of each issue.
 
Magnificat can’t be used as an LOTH substitute. As noted it isn’t merely a condensed LOTH but takes some liberties with format and content. It isn’t liturgy it rather private prayer. That isn’t a bad thing and it can be seen as a stepping stone to get folks interested in the LOTH. But it’s a pity they didn’t just stick to a condensation of the LOTH.
