Hello all,

I was recently thinking of picking up a Missal. I was told it could help me with learning the Mass and so forth. Anyhow, a Priest at Church says to hold off as there is going to be some changes to the Mass and not to spend money on a shiny new Missal.

He also recommended Magnificat. He says it has the Mass in it as well as more. I already have a Christian Prayer LOTH and I only attend Mass on Sundays as of now.

Would you say its worth it to subscribe? What do you like/dislike about it?
 
yes I like the size and the typescript, the articles, and it features a work of religious art in every issue. for travel it is also good, because it has a morning and evening prayer, saint, and meditation as well as the Mass readings for each day, and the order of the Mass. Another book, larger size, larger type is Word Among us, which in addition to the order of the Mass and the readings (if you select this version) has a meditation for each day based on the readings, and several inspirational articles on a theme. You could also get a St. Joseph 2010 Sunday Missal which has the order of the Mass, including most of the Eucharistic prayers and prefaces, plus the readings, and a good selection of prayers and devotions. I too would hold off on a permanent missal until they get their act together publishing the new translations.
 
Being that I already have the Christian Prayer book for Liturgy of the Hours and I only go to Mass on Sunday, would getting this subscription be still worth it?
 
I got a subscription for my Mom’s birthday in the spring and she really enjoys it. She also has the book of Christian prayer and usually attends mass only on Sundays.
They have a website that you can check out and they will send you a sample copy that you can look over to decide if this is worth your while.

I would say “yes”. When I had a subscription, I found it especially useful for when I was traveling and wasn’t sure what kind of missal would be in the parishes I might find myself in. Also, my home parish at the time had these OCP missals which I always found a bit confusing. Magnificat is very well organized, much better than OCP’s, in my opinion.
 
I say it is worth it. You might find you like it so much that you will continue with the subscription. I have been a subscriber for close to 10 years now and love it!

The Magnificat is a beautiful magazine that is small enough to take with you. It has great meditations along with the daily Mass. I personally do not subscribe for two reasons. The first reason is the cost. I have friends who occasionally give me an extra copy that they might have. If I did not already have Christian Prayer I might overlook the cost.
A cheaper alternative is God’s Word Today. If you subscribe to God’s Word Today, be sure you request the supplemental edition, the one with the Daily Mass included. Even if you only attend Sunday Mass, it is great to have the daily readings available.

There is a third reason that I do not subscribe to either magazine at the present time. My response is based on my being stateside. I am currently in the Persian Gulf where the cost of postage is high and mail unreliable.

It seems like a great magazine to have. I just didnt know if its something that I wont get much out of being I already have LOTH and just go on Sundays.

I was going to recommend you get a sample sent to you, so good choice there! I have the St. Joseph’s missal set and I still subscribe to Magnifcat. There’s so much extra stuff included in the magazine that you really can’t go wrong with it. I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet, but it is the perfect size to carry with you everywhere and you don’t have to worry about damaging it since you’ll only use it for a month; I take it to work and it gets all sorts of beat up.

If you don’t feel comfortable paying a subscription, you can also buy one at any Catholic book store (if you have one in the area). You’ll save more money in the long run with a subscription, but I just wanted you to know about your other option.

Magnificat is a superb publication; especially so if you attend daily Mass. I love the commentary on a sacred art work they include in each edition. Also, the special editions are nice too. However, if you want a Missal I would not doubt that you can get a rather inexpensive one until the newly approved revisions come out. And, since this is the case, I would imagine the cost of such missals are probably “on sale” anyways.

BUT … Magnificat also offers a leather cover complete with inserts where you can put you monthly copy to save it from so much wear and tear. I think it costs somewhere between $10-15. I think they also produce a less expensive clear plastic cover, too.

A friend of mine has subscribed for several years and loves Magnificat. I purchased the Advent companion at church - they were for sale for $3 - and followed along with the readings most days. I just ordered the sample edition and will probably subscribe.

If you use your LOTH, than perhaps you don’t need it. I love it because of the daily meditations, Saint bios, and other info in each month’s version. We also use it for family prayer (morning and evening) and it is so easy for the kids to follow along. My oldest carries her’s in her backpack and reads the Mass readings each day at school!
 
My parish gave all parishoners a free copy for Advent. Evidently an individual subscription is $45 a year but if more than 500 apply for a bulk subscription the cost drops to $25. My parish is having a drive so that we can get it at the discounted price. I like it.
 
Well I got my sample copy…

I must say it is better than I expected and I expected a lot. It is small enough to carry anywhere. It does have a lot of interesting “helps”. The morning and evening prayers in no way are even close to what you get out of LOTH, so there is no double dipping of prayers if you will.

The Mass order I cant comment on. I did get a St. Joseph Sunday Missal and I am still getting the hang of that…I have no idea how the “flow” of it is using the Magnificat.

I would say Im about 80% sure I will get a least a 6 month subscription. It breaks down to costing about $0.80 per week. Not a bad deal at all.

I asked for a sample four years ago and never got it, so don’t hold your breathe. 😉 Oh, my, just read where you got your copy…lucky you…maybe I should read that whole thread before posting huh? Lesson learned for today.

I would subscribe, but I’m trying to teach the kids how to look up verses in the Bible, and being from a Protestant back ground, I like to look up the readings every day.

I do like the extras in magificant though…

YES! It’s the best publication!!! SO worth it! I think LOTR is too hard to figure out on one’s own, without a tutor. I have both, I prefer the Magnificat!
 
Got my copy today. I haven’t had much time to review it but I gave it a cursory glance. I was a little dissapointed to see it is for the OF. It does have the latin ordinary in it. But the cost is too much considering I keep attendence at the OF to a minimum. Perhaps I’ll spend a little more time with it this week.
 
i would definitely recommend subscribing to the Magnificat if you can afford to. i began subscribing before i converted to Catholicism and stopped receiving it for awhile. i really missed it. it helps my prayer and spiritual life and has so many informative and spiritual readings inside. i take it to Mass with me. i would at least give it a try. i look forward to each new issue that comes.
