Definitely a mockery! Shame on that priest! Children should be taught early on that the sacred Eucharist must be treated reverently. It isn’t a cookie! Of course, it was unconsecrated, but it still gives the wrong impression, and the wrong idea. After church this morning our priest took my 5 year old and a couple others into his office and gave them unconsecrated hosts and they were chomping on them as snacks on the way out, the large ones. And he said “he can be a priest at home I gave him the large host that I use!” Is this ok??? I thought it made a huge mockery of everything
Aside from the irreverence of doing this, receiving the Eucharist is a human encounter since Christ shares our humanity and we’re called to share in his divinity. This is why, those taking communion to the sick and housebound aren’t supposed to just hand the pyx or even the host to the one receiving without saying any more than “the body of Christ”. It’s supposed to be about a personal (and in close, rather than exclusive) relationship with our Lord which is obviously lost without a human encounter. Can the Catholic Church send it’s parishioners consecrated Eucharist through the postal service so everyone can partake during the streamed liturgy?
