Main Catholic Church in Barcelona

hi there,

i’m going to barcelona for a week’s break with my hubbie and 2 yr old daughter. i was just wondering if anyone else had been and could recommend any sights?

also is it child friendly? i’ve found paris to be so and our capital city of london quite the opposite! :rolleyes:

and i’d like to know what the main catholic cathedrale is called and i always love visiting them.

the Cathedral, Holy Family, is supposed to be an architectural marvel, but has been under construction for ovr 70 years, because the intricate plans of the architect were destroyed by anti-clerical forces who trashed the construction site during Spains civil war. saw a special about it on the History Channel.

Ah, the Sagrada Familia cathedral - certainly well worth seeing. The architect was Antonio Gaudi, but you’re right, it wasn’t completed. Info and pics here.

At various times it has been debated whether to try to complete it according to his plans (which were idiosyncratic to say the least) or perhaps leave it somewhat unfinished. My own opinion is that it would be difficult at the very least to find someone with the same vision and inspiration who could do an adequate job of completing it. Not that I really know squat about architecture.
 
While you are in Barcelona, you must visit MontserraT. It is situated 38 kilometres from Barcelona, near the towns of Manresa and Igualada, an awesome place on the stone mountain, 1236 metres above sea level. The Shrine built up there is incredible. You take the cable car up there. Go there light a cancle and pray. I think Pope John Paul II has been there.
 
Sagrada Familia and Montserrat are ABSOLUTE MUST sees, although neither is the PRIMARY Cathedral in Barcelona. That would be the old Gothic Cathedral of Santa Eulalia, which is also quite a beautiful cathedral.

If you’re asking what THE main Catholic Cathedral is for the whole Catholic Church, that’s St. Peter’s (The Vatican) in Rome.
