Main Reasons Don't Like/Attend EF Mass

For those of you who do not like or do not attend Extraordinary Form (EF) masses (i.e., “Latin masses,” “Gregorian Rite masses,” “Traditional Latin Masses” (TLMs), “Tridentine masses,” or masses according to the 1962 missal), what is your primary reason for not liking or not attending them?
 
None of the above. We currently have only one Sunday EF Mass in the whole diocese and it is too far to get to with my family. When we had one closer, I went every time it was offered (once a month). But that one was nixed.
 
Our family would go if there were one in a two hour radius of our home! For now it just isn’t an option. I wish it were though! Maybe someday…
 
None of the above. I grew up with the EF, I don’t dislike it, just prefer the OF and the vernacular and the more active participation. If we switched back to the EF, I’d be OK with that, except perhaps the one year cycle. I definitely prefer the extra Scripture readings.

The EF is not widely available around here, but there is an FSSP parish in the Diocese, about an hour from where I live. Too far to get involved regularly in parish activities and I do like being involved in my parish. I spend a fair amount of time at the church.

I voted “because it is not currently common” which I take to mean that it is not realily available. In our large diocese there are only two or three locations and only one Sunday mass at each. If the EF were more widely available I would try to attend as often as possible.

Actually I think that this is probalby posted in the wrong forum. You would probaly get a better cross-section of answers if it was posted in the liturgy forum. If you agree perhaps the moderator could move it for you.

They’re are not many in my area. There are probably two churches within “reasonable” distance from my home to attend – but they only do ONE per MONTH. Always seem to miss it 😦
 
One response missing from your poll, and the one I would have checked if it had been present, is “I am perfectly satisfied with the OF Mass.”
 
I will be attending a Latin Mass sometime this month. How long are they? I have a pashmini scarf on its way to me as we speak to wear to the Mass. Should be interesting. My plan is to sit near someone older than I am because they will know how to pronounce the words, and I can hear how the words should be pronounced. Should be interesting. Starting next month I’ll not have weekends off (I work in law enforcement), so I’ll be attending a KOREAN Mass which is the last Mass heard at my parish on Sundays. So I guess I’ll be learning Latin and Korean in the next few weeks – should be interesting. 😃
 
Too uncommon, which is so unfortunate to me. 😦 I’d go every day if it were available. Oh well.

As far as I know the EF isn’t celebrated anywhere in my diocese. Unfortunately, even if it were, unless it was being celebrated in my own parish it would be too far away for me to attend.

The TLM has been held in our city, right down the street from my house, since the mid 1980s. TLM is offered daily and several times on weekends. The priests from ICK offer the TLM.

I wish you would have added this response to your Poll. I could probably add my response to your Poll, but none of your answers are my reason for not attending. All of those answers are critical of the EF, and I have no criticisms of the EF. I just prefer the OF. The OF is offered reverently in our city by excellent priests who are in submission to a wonderful bishop, Thomas Doran. Our bishop does not tolerate abuses of the Mass.

there is no choice for “not available in my area” or I have commitments that keep me in my own parish
 
I like EF masses all right, but what I miss is understanding the epistle and Gospel and havind a short homily during the week. I could do without the homily, I guess, but readings in English would be nice. Other than that, the EF Mass is okay with me. I still attend at least once a week, but I feel like I’m missing out. I used to feel like I couldn’t participate enough, but I’m getting over that. The participation is different from OF Masses, but with a good prayer book with prayers to say at all the different parts of the Mass, I feel like I am participating now. In fact, I almost feel as if I do a better job of uniting myself and my intentions with Jesus at the EF… Not a lot of responses to distract me maybe, I don’t know.
A largely EF Mass with readings in English (or English and Latin) would be just right!
 
On the issue of the scripture cycle, I think the readings and the calendar of the EF should be adjusted, so that the EF and OF “match” a little better. Unfortunately, after basically being shelved for 40+ years (with a few exceptions), the EF has been “frozen in time” at 1962, rather than continuing to evolve as it had for centuries prior. If the rumours of the “Missal of Benedict XVI” ever turn out to be true, we may very well see that happen.

It depends if it is a high or low masses. Low masses are usually no longer than an hour (just like Novus Ordo masses), and high masses are usually no longer than 1.5 hours.
