I thought this was a really interesting video – really explains the topic well. Has anybody else around here seen this? Maybe it’s been discussed before…

watched it, but didn’t move me one way or another…if we had no music, and only recited the Sanctus, and Hosanna, and the Gloria, et al., that’s good enough for me.

this is so true. With the short films I’ve made, music was always the first thing I searched for way ahead. It was important that the genre matched the topic, even though the lyrics may have matched better with another song.

That’s why happy clappy songs don’t belong at church. There’s a sacrifice taking place, not a family reunion.

Thank you! I found this video as very insightful and it gives me some good arguments when discussing with others the need for more reverent church music.
 
Really? You didn’t think the example at 3:00 was meaningful? It isn’t necessarily that the choral music is moving, but that the drumset / guitar music is so out of place.

I found ot unconvincing. The holy sacrifice of the mass is not a Mel Gibson movie.

Yes, the Mass is more real, more meaningful, more profound than a religious movie. That’s why drumset sounds even more ill-suited to the occasion.

I did find the drum version of the video inappropriate, but I have never heard anything like that be used during mass. I found the choral version to be too much like a soundtrack and therefore also not something I want to hear at mass.

No drums at any churches around here, and we’re supposed to be a “liberal” Diocese.
Unless you count the native drumming at the Pueblo parishes. Which is very soothing and nice.
But then, their liturgy is Spanish with Tewa singing.
