Hello Everyone 🙂

I am 22 years-old 🙂 I have $140,000 in my bank due to my friend giving my $100,000 of her savings because she has become a nun. I have two options that I can take:
  • become a priest (am I needed to become one?)
  • or to become a mulit-millionaire and raise a large family
I am almost a full-qualified accountant and I aim to become a company director. While I do this I plan to invest my money into property and run other businesses before eventually becoming full-time or allowing my children to run that business if I am making a lot of money as a company director.

What do you guys say?

No one here can tell you if you have a vocation to the priesthood or not that is something you have to explore for yourself.

However I will tell you this, if God wants you to be a priest the money should not come into consideration, you must be a priest.

The only question you need to answer is are you called by God to the priesthood or not.

I say the money issue has absolutely nothing to do with discerning a vocation, so take that off the table when you start listing pros and cons of each choice. Then you pray, you listen, and do as God directs you. You put yourself under good spiritual direction as you do this so you do not mistake your own voice for God’s will.

Exactly. A man doesn’t become a Priest because he has no other options, can’t start a family, a business etc. but because it is what God calls him to be.

Now if your asking which path is better in general, In my opinion it would be better to become a Priest (even if I had 1 million in the bank) but that is a decision each individual must make himself. I can’t tell you which path to follow. Only God can do that

I am starting to feel like a broken record.

Get a Spiritual Director.

**Pay it forward!

Give away the $140,000 to help those in need & spend time as a poor missionary.**

You will figure out real quick if a life of selfless sacrifice is for you!!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

I’m sure you could find one or two discerning members of CAF who could use it, lol.

Actually, donating a portion of the money to a foundation that provides debt relief for those entering religious life would seem fitting, although that has no impact on your discernment.

I agree with ByzCath, find a spiritual director if possible, at least discuss it with a parish priest.

I think that I am trying so hard with everything because I have a calling from God to become a priest. I only want to make a woman happy because I am unseflish, but I was never content about it. When I was searching for women they were not quite special enough and then when I did find someone who was like ‘top dog’ I felt like I was called for something greater. It seems that the only thing that will satisfy my desire and passion is becoming a priest or something like that. Even though I would love to make a woman happy, have kids for God and make loads of money for the needy I feel like I am not meant to be in a relationship with a woman. My desire for God is too great.

I especially feel like I need to go full-time for God, because I always think about Him and I don’t really have any interest in accountancy. Sure, accountancy is easy but you know. Maybe I will do God’s accounts in heaven hehe 😃

Oh, life is crazy 😉 😛

Anybody got any ideas about what I should do with my life? There are loads of different things that I could do like join the Jesuits or become a diocese priest and so on…

sorry I have just seen what a jesuit is and I do not want to be one of those 😃 I want to definitely become a priest.

Well priests have to handle accounts for their parish so it would not be wasted if you did have a calling to the priesthood. The life of a secular parish priest is not all prayers unfortunately, we are not in heaven yet, though work itself is prayer if done for God.

With all due respect, and I do mean with respect, if you don’t know the difference between a Jesuit and a priest, then as Brother David and CDNowak said above, you should seek out a spiritual director and get some help with finding the best way to serve God. You can’t decide on an option until you fully understand what the options are.

By the way, the substantial majority of Jesuits *are *priests. 😉

But Jesuits(except for the lay brothers) **are **priests. They teach, are diocesians, missionaries, and so. Why in the past(and I am sure today), have many hated them?

Anyway, if my only options were to become a priest or a wealthy accountant, I would choose the priesthood without question. Being a frugal person anyway, I do not care about personal wealth. You have to ask whether you are more motivated extrinsically or intrinsically? That is not to say that extrinsic motivation involves only money.

Jesuits in the past, because of their loyalty to the Pope, were suppressed by various countries and eventually all together.

More recently they have been characterized as having done away with any loyalty to the Pope, particularly since a number of high profile Jesuits were active in dissent movements after Humane Vitae (including persuading the Kennedy clan to follow the personally opposed line).

Thank you, Mr. Nowak. I know, for instance, about Fr. Drinan, but I still feel that contempt for them unwarrented. However, if I were to become one, I would be an ultramontane Traditionalist. Is that consistent with the “official” Jesuit ideology?

I’m no ultramontanist (link for benefit of lurkers), but it is consist with their original founding.
