And just the other day I was saying that SSPX and the larger Church really needed each other.

I’m grieved at this attitude.
Amidst some well-known talking points, the interview granted by Bishop Alfonso de Galarreta to District magazine Iesus Christus (one of the four bishops consecrated by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X - FSSPX / SSPX in 1988 and whose excommunication was lifted by Pope Benedict XVI last January) included the following:

-What prospects do you see for the Fraternity of Saint Pius X in the future? An agreement with Rome? A canonical recognition?

-[Galarreta:] No, absolutely not, whether in the immediate or in the mediate future. We specifically exclude this possibility. We know that while there is no return to Tradition on the part of Rome, any practical or canonical agreement is incompatible with the public confession and defense of the faith, and would mean our death. In the best of cases, humanly speaking, we will have several years of discussions.

It seems to me the longer a group remains in disobediance, the harder it is to reverse themselves and reconcile. There are now issues of pride involved that will prevent that from happening.

Amen! He saw it - called it like it is - and was punished - for what? For being Catholic!

There’s nothing to be sorrowful about the above mentioned interview. He’s simply acknowledging the fact that this is going to be a process that will take years. The current attitude in the hierarchy is not exactly promising - abuse abounds and evil doers go un-reprimanded by Rome…
 
Abp. Weakland, etc, might have personal sins to answer for–but they they remained in full visible communion with the Church.

Bp. Galarreta’s words boil down to the hand saying to the eye, “I have no need of thee.”

First off, a few things.
What’s the date for this? To post this without a date (for the transcript) is horribly wrong. Things have changed in the past few months, and esp. in the past few years, at least on the Vatican side. We have no idea when this interview was published, and when it was taken.

Next, Bp. de Galarreta IS NOT THE HEAD of the SSPX. Bp. Fellay is. He’s been elected numerous times, and he is the current head of the SSPX. He’s a brilliant guy, and he knows what to do.

In addition to that, are Bp. de Galarreta’s thoughts the epitome of the SSPX? NO! To claim that EVERYONE in the SSPX thinks the way Bp. de Galarreta thinks is to paint them with the same, WRONG brush that everyone painted the SSPX with when they were called anti-Semites in the Bp. Williamson flap.

In addition, there was no link presented with this. The posting of this article is imprudent without a link or a timestamp/date.

And, like I said in the earlier thread, it’s best we all keep our traps SHUT about the doctrinal discussions, and PRAY that the SSPX comes fully to the Catholic Church/is fully regularized.

When you use the word “group”, would you include individual parishes, or even dioceses as “groups”. Because if so, a lot of “groups” in “good standing” with Rome have been truly disobedient for twice as long as the SSPX…And unlike the SSPX, the disobedience of these “groups” isn’t happening by attempting to be orthodox or follow the supreme law of the church. The SSPX sorta just stayed put while a lot of other “groups” “within” the Church just sorta shifted hard to the left.

Now if only the LA and SF dioceses would shift just a little more to geographic “left”…hehe, then we could start over in those areas.
 
If the SSPX has declared that there is no possibility of coming to an agreement with the Vatican, what exactly is the point of having discussions? Why would either party bother with these ‘discussions’ if one party has already taken reconciliation off the table?

Where has the SSPX declared this!? You are putting words in the mouths of an ENTIRE ORGANIZATION.

BP. DE GALARRETA IS NOT SPEAKING AS THE SSPX. HE IS A BISHOP OF THE SSPX, BUT DOES NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT THEIR VIEWS.

BISHOP FELLAY IS THE HEAD OF THE SSPX. YOU SHOULD INSTEAD LOOK FOR HIS COMMENTS ON THIS ISSUE.

AS THE DOCTRINAL DISCUSSIONS ARE STILL ON-GOING, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THERE IS SOMETHING POSITIVE.

I ONCE AGAIN MAKE MY CALL FOR YOU PEOPLE TO STOP ATTACKING THE SSPX, AND INSTEAD PRAY FOR THEM AND THE CHURCH AS THE DISCUSSIONS GO ON.

No, the Baptists are heretics who reject the sacraments and teachings of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Just as the head of the German Bishops Conference recently did when he denied that Our Lord died for our redemption. Grieved over that lately?

You really don’t have a clue about the history of Archbishop Rembert Weakland, do you? He gave aid and comfort to the pro aborts, the homosexuals, the dissenters, called Pope John Paul II “a ham actor”, destroyed the faith of thousands, and oversaw and hid the abuse of children in his diocese. But, yep, that’s what is considered to be communion with the Holy See these days. Just don’t attend one of those horrid SSPX Masses, it will be your damnation.

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee - my home - is in shambles because of his 20+ year reign as Archbishop.

We need your prayers.

Also, pray we get a great bishop from Pope Benedict XVI.

We had one (Abp. Dolan), but someone stole him. 😦

Ora, I read the dossier put together on Weakland back in the early nineties by a local Catholic(I can’t recall his name now). Anyone who knows the facts about that man and considers him to be a Christian, let alone a Roman Catholic, has no idea of what they speak. And yet Rome allowed him to do his damage for two decades before he was forced to resign because of scandal.

I definitely will pray that Our Holy Father gives Milwaukee a good Bishop, you folks need one desperately.

Ora sounds like a pretty cool name… considers it for (future - hopefully!!) children, haha

But, I’ll give the man credit for one thing: He opposed hand holding during the Our Father. A broken clock is right twice a day!

We have a decent Auxiliary (Bp. Callahan - not Bp. Sklba), who oversaw the renovation/restoration (?) of the St Josaphat Basilica (very well done, I think). But, alas, we need a good Archbishop!

And the SSPX conducts illicit sacraments by suspended clergy who claim allegence to the Pope while disregarding his authority.
I spent twenty years as a “fighting fundamentalist”. I am enjoying being a Catholic too much, praying the Rosary, going to Mass to want to fight anymore. I will let the Lord sort out who is and who is not a heretic and is going to Hell now.
There is more to tradition than just what language a Mass is in, and complaining about some liberal Bishops in Germany.
Jesus said the “gates of Hell” will not prevail against His Church.
You’ll pardon me if I take our Lord’s word for it.

I think the members of the SSPX could do a lot more for Catholicism if they worked for change within the Church instead of apart from it.

I too grieve that Bishop Weakland was allowed to act as he did for so long, that the Notre Dame scandal happened, etc. But it is no news that there are sinners in the Church. We’ve known that since Judas. I hope and pray that God can bring good from bad situations.
