Do your own sins mean that you are neither a Christian, nor a Roman Catholic?
I should have been clearer in my post. Everyone around here loves to talk about Canon Law, especially as it applies to the SSPX. In the opinion of great saints and canonists like Cajetan, Bellarmine, Suarez, etc., only a Roman Catholic can hold high office in the Church.
The 1917 code of Canon Law declares that a non Catholic is disqualified from the office of Bishop. Bellarmine says that a Bishop who holds any manifest heresy loses his office(his opinion, not mine). Weakland did hold opinions contrary to the Faith of the Catholic Church. Therefore, according to the 1917 code, he would be disqualified from high office.
The dossier I mentioned in the earlier post isn’t about Weakland’s personal pecaddiloes, but about his undermining of the Catholic Church through heresy. In this sense do I say he’s not a Christian, just as I would no longer be a Catholic if I declared today that abortion was to be tolerated, or that homosexuality isn’t a sin. I would be a heretic.
Of course, I submit myself to the ultimate decision of Holy Mother Church. But we are allowed to have opinions about these matters. Being a faithful Catholic doesn’t mean we are automatons, or have to be silent in the face of injustice or evil, even if that evil is perpretrated by churchmen. Weakland was a wolf in sheperd’s clothing, a true hireling who did grave damage to the Church. Them’s just the facts.
Or only certain sins of certain other people–but never you and yours?
I deserve to be in hell for my sins. I thank God that He saved me through grace. If it weren’t for the Sacrament of Penance, I don’t know where I’d be right now. As for “mine”, I don’t know their personal sins. But they also don’t hold authority over the souls of the faithful, who should not be given bread when asked for stones.
