You beat me to it. You could pass out flyers to all of the families in the neighborhood and have all of them sit outside to watch all of the kids ride in a parade down the street at a specific time.

We lived somewhere years ago where all of the dads rode their ride on mowers down the street in a parade as well.

Hmmm. I like it! There’s lot of kids in the neighborhood. I wonder how many would do it? We could open it to scooters, skates, and wagons for the babies!

When I was a kid I would
  • wear red white and blue
  • dress up my dolls and stuffed animals in red white and blue outfits or ribbons
  • maybe my parents would give me some little “patriotic” trinket from the dime store, like a metal pinwheel that lit up red and blue,
  • I would often bake, or help bake, some red white and blue dessert to be eaten in the evening
  • we would sometimes have those red white and blue popsicles
  • kids would decorate their bikes red white and blue and ride in the city parade
  • some kids would wear costumes or hats like Uncle Sam, Betsy Ross (prairie dresses were common then and the girls would add a little white hat), soldier hats made out of folded newspaper etc
  • My mom would always get “snakes” to light on the driveway and watch them uncoil
  • Some years we also had sparklers; they were easy to get burned on though, so maybe not good for very liitle kids
  • There would be games at the playground like “who can blow the biggest bubblegum bubble”, or water balloon toss with red white and blue balloons, or hunting for something (your glow sticks sound like a great idea)
  • Often, weather permitting, we’d have a cookout and picnic in our yard (parks were WAY too crowded that day)

Oh yes, wagons for little kids is a great idea! You might want to “survey” the neighbors. Even people without kids might like to watch. Maybe organize some ice cream or cookies afterward to grab and go with some neighbors at the end of the parade route.

I could call the ice cream truck. I don’t know if they run on holidays, but normally, if you have a neighborhood event, they will come by if you call them.

Otherwise, icey pops for everyone! I wonder if it would be more popular in the morning or in the evening?

Daylight, maybe morning so people aren’t running off to family bbqs?

I thought maybe in the evening because people might be having BBQs in their yard.

That’s true, but before it gets too dark to see and buggy, lol!

It’s light out until after 9PM here, so that won’t be a problem.

Anything patriotic themed could be tied into the meaning of Independence Day, for small children like yours it could be be simply described as “America’s birthday”.

Call it “America’s Birthday”. Check. We’re still having cobbler though, because cake is boring and picking black berries is fun.

We do sundaes with vanilla ice cream and red (straw/rasp/berry) and blue (berry) toppings. Anything with water is a blast. Our town parade and fireworks activities are cancelled, so apart from the sparklers, I’ll pull my recipe from Pinterest for those super-giant bubbles.

I usually wear an American flag shirt that says “God bless America”. And as anyone who has seen my YouTube videos knows, I very rarely wear T-shirts. My brother used to have a flag with an (American) Indian on it. My Grandpa (who was not American Indian, that would have been my Grandma), said he thought all American flags should have an Indian on them. I personally think that was to appease Grandma. Anyway, I love America, I love our flag, I love Pecan Pie. That day can combine all three. In fact, in my living room, I have a Dreamcatcher over an American flag. Celebrate it how you want, just don’t hurt anyone. Seriously, some random drunk dude punched my Saudi friend in the face on year. A non-American that loves America so much that he joined us celebrating it.

I put up red, white, and blue buntings on my porch For the 4th of July and leave them up the rest of the summer. We fly the flag every day anyway until bad weather kicks in. I often plant red, white and blue annual flowers as well. 🇺🇸

I love the 4th of July. It is the one day that I think we should just put aside all political leanings and everything negative and just be happy! 🌭 🍔 🍗 🧃 🍺 🍹
