I picked up some lace-weight purple silk to make my veil with. The lady at the yarn store loved the idea and suggested I make a smaller version of the Fountain Pen shawl in the current issue of Interweave Knits. It’s very cool, but I’m a better crocheter than I am a knitter.

I think I shall use this lace pattern: mypicot.com/crochet_patterns_opl2007.html
with this edge: mypicot.com/crochet_patterns_cole3017.html

I will keep you all updated 😃

Wow, pretty!

Well, I made a shawl pattern in #10 crochet thread, adding a few clear sequins (about one per row) for sparkle. It made a lovely triangle, but the consensus from my boys was WEIRD.

I took it to Church and modeled it for a couple of ladies, who agreed with my family. One of them even said it made me look like a cafeteria lady whose hairnet came undone. 😛

I wound up giving it to a friend whose hair is both blacker and fuller than mine. Interestingly enough, it looked fine on her.🤷 She doesn’t veil, but had to while she was growing up in Mexico. She’s that wonderful kind of lady who doesn’t really care what other people think about her and will do pretty much whatever she wants, including wearing a chapel veil that makes me look like a deranged lunch lady.😃

Now I’m going to try something else. Maybe go buy half a yard of black lace and make a mantilla. Maybe join that yahoo group and learn how to really make a chapel veil. Maybe try a semicircle, now that I’ve found instructions on that. Maybe it would help if I made it in dark auburn to match my hair.

But if anyone knits, there are a few patterns for to be found. There’s this one that a friend is trying out. And there is a lovely First Communion veil here.

Enjoy.🙂
I wouldn’t put much store in my family’s opinion about such things. They always think I’m weird. Neither of those links worked for me.

Don’t the headbands show, tho’? Otherwise this would be a good thing for me to do also, as my hair is very fine and I have trouble keeping my veil on. In the past I wore a black one so the haircomb I used to keep it on didn’t show, but I don’t want to have to wear black anymore and I’m having trouble finding combs (Goody-type) in anything but dark brown - my hair is light brown, the part that isn’t gray, I mean. It seems to me that on a similar thread a while ago someone mentioned that small velcro tabs kept a veil on very fine hair (bobby pins don’t work for me, either), but I haven’t tried it. Has anyone else tried this?
Can you still buy hatpins? I have a couple that belonged to my Southern granny and they work very well.

I have also tried to buy hat pins. I finally found them in Colonial Williamsburg in a shop where they sell 18th century style straw hats. I bought one black and one pearl. The only other hat pins I could find were in antique stores, and they cost more than my hats!

I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten hat pins at Wal-Mart in the sewing department. I’m not sure they still have sewing departments at Wal-Mart since they’ve been turning them all into monster super stores. Maybe Joann Fabric or some other fabric store would have them. They’re with the pins and notions. I think the Ben Franklin Craft Stores have them too.

just thought I’d share:

tonight I made a veil in about 15 minutes for under $5…yep…it is possible.:pshaw:

Steps:
  1. go to wall-mart or any fabric store
  2. find some fabric…either lace or solid (I personally prefer solid material and then I tie it under my hair) and get 1 - 1.5 yards of it.
  3. get “Stitch Witchery” (ultra lite weight, especially if you’re using lace!!)…I am a terrible seamstress and this looks just as good and holds up arguably better than sewing the edges…takes about 1/10th of the time.
  4. cut the shape you want with an extra half inch around the edges. If anyone wants exact measurements of mine I will post them…but really, anything goes.
  5. follow the directions for the stitch witchery…extra around the edges. Max 15 minutes, I promise.
  6. cutt off any hanging threads
  7. attend Mass :byzsoc:
material: $1.40 - $ 3.00 depending on the material
Stitch Witchery: $1.58

I found for young fidgety girls that a shoulder cape with hood done in lace works well. No fuss no muss and you never loose them. 😃

The Godey’s headdress is great, but I agree, lose the tassels. I never thought of the stitch witchery. It’s a good idea, especially for my crocheted laces. I will give it a look.

JoAnn had some new designer laces last time I was there, and although some of it was $70 per yard, it was drool-worthy. Good quality beaded stuff. It would be great for a mantilla-style wedding veil or a special mass,

I have been crocheting on an everyday cover made from Lion Brand Incredible, a nylon ribbon. I’m using the accent on black color. I have also been working on one or two expandable headbands in black crinkled cotton gauze. These can be bunched up for a thick headband or pulled open more like a bandana. And last but not least, I want a Hollie Hobbie sunbonnet for gardening.

For little girls, I have seen some way cute “tortilla mantillas” that are just about 6" across and are pinned on. One I saw was made from eyelet lace. Cute!!

Keep me updated on all your veil-making adventures. I ❤️ this thread!

God bless,

That lace in the link you provided is beautiful! :coolinoff: That price though … must be for bulk amounts, I’ve got to check that out! Beats the heck out of stuff I see at WalMart ( gag!) and Hobby Lobby (my only choices around here)

I want to crochet something ! :slapfight: Time … Time … Time…I need to fast from the computer!

God bless! Dana

I made a chapel veil for someone who was being received into the Church a couple of years ago. It was shaped as a half circle, I find these drape the most pretty on my shoulders instead of the triangle style. I took a flexible measuring tape, and draped it loosely over the top of my head and then down to however long I wanted it to be, with the end at one shoulder. This was the straight edge measurement, add on about an inch if you need to turn over the edge of the fabric when sewing. Then I got a big piece of paper - I think I used an opened up paper garbage bag (great for making patterns). I drew the straight line at the edge of the paper and found the center point. Then I got a pencil and some string and made a compass to draw the arc by holding the end of the string in the center of the drawn line, and swinging the pencil from one end of the line to the other, drawing the arc of the curve for the back of the veil.

Cut it out, pin it to your fabric, and finish it up! 👍 It really was VERY easy, and now I have the pattern for future veils.

Gosh - I hope that made sense, it was like trying to tell someone how to tie their shoes!!! 😛

I hear you!!! Maybe I should give up e-mail and forums next year for Lent. Probably not though. It’s my last vice 😃

The half-circle idea is what I’ve been basing my crocheted veil on. I’m rounding the corners, though. That’s taking me a bit of forever…I was hoping to have it done during lent cuz it’s purple. (A lady in my parish is wearing a small purple covering during lent and I think it’s great.) The lace edging is wider than I thought it would be. Ah, the joy of crafting.
