Making a confession

i asked my priest today after mass if i could make a confession since i sinned last night. the regularly scheduled time for that is saturdays but i really felt the need to make a confession and wanted to be in a state of grace for Christmas tomorrow. he gave a slight sigh and i think he might have been bothered by me asking although he could have just been tired or something… anyway, i was told though when i converted that when asked, priests are suppose to hear confessions. is this correct? the other priest, the one i usually go for confession, never seems to mind and is always happy too.

The problem is the disruption of the Sunday Mass, as you were not in any sign of grave danger the sign to wait was reasonable (not desirable). Imagine if you went to mass and waited in a full church for 40 minutes only to hear – Sorry a lot of people want to confess this morning to join Eucharistic services, hopefully the priest will be with us soon-
 
Perhaps that priest was feeling a bit stressed anyway, with this being a busy time for him. Don’t take his sigh personally. It’s perfectly fine to ask a priest to hear your confession outside of the regular hours, esp. if you ask after Mass, which it appears that you did. I have done so myself on occasion.

did he end up hearing your confession?
 
For most Priests the Sunday schedule is full many have to drive to other towns and perform other Masses. Our Priest(s) have 4 Masses each Sunday Plus a Saturday night Mass plus Saturday Confession, plus any Weddings, or Baptism scheduled month in advance. Additionally, they have Monday-Friday Mass. We ask them to squeeze in a visit with RCIA each year however we get little or no visit. I think it is because we they ~300 kids in ccd. Many small parishes have to share a Priest in good times, and use deacons (communion service) often when no Priest is available. We recently went a year without a Priest. I know the Priest would accommodate if time permitted and it would not lead to other issues. I hope the OP understands it was not a personal issue. Special confession hours are usually scheduled through the office, even then it may take days or weeks depending on the situations. Of course not all parishes are the same.

also, i did wait until after mass to ask to make the confession.
 
you could try to call other parishes. You might not be able to confess just the day before Christmas. Try anyway.
 
The priest is bound under Canon Law to hear your confession.

Canon 986 §1. All to whom the care of souls has been entrusted in virtue of some function are obliged to make provision so that the confessions of the faithful entrusted to them are heard when they reasonably seek to be heard and that they have the opportunity to approach individual confession on days and at times established for their convenience.

§2. In urgent necessity, any confessor is obliged to hear the confessions of the Christian faithful, and in danger of death, any priest is so obliged.
