An Illinois church has placed a full-page, pro-life ad in *USA Today *in hopes of delivering a message to presidential candidates – and at the same time, challenging churches.

The ad – found on page 5A of the August 6, 2007, issue of the nationwide newspaper – is titled “A Lesson from Samuel - A Child or a Choice.” The centerpiece of the ad is the famous picture taken by veteran photojournalist Michael Clancy from Nashville. He was hired by *USA Today *in 1999 to photograph a spina bifida corrective surgical procedure.

That’s a picture of baby Samual I think, very good because it is actually considered a graphic photo of an alive baby. Would you believe that many people who purport to be prolife think that photo is not appropriate and too graphic!?

Now any newspaper in the country would show a photo of a past injustice like a black being beaten or lynched but those same papers will not show what abortion does to an unborn baby. It’s unfortunately ironic.

The best thing we can do for Church’s is educate them on the laws from the IRS. You can do your pastor a great favor by printing out and handing them this: priestsforlife.org/elections/symposiumwatkins.htm

I actually got the paper that day and saw the ad… The picture just jumped out at you!!! It was a pleasant surprise.

Although this is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever seen it merely helps show the humanity of the unborn by educating those who were ignorant to that fact before hand.

But what it doesn’t do is dehumanize abortion which is why beautiful photos aren’t as effective as graphic ones.

When we look back to how social reformers in the past were successful we see the following:
  1. Reformers showed massacred bodies of native americans to show the victimization and were able to change the conscience of the country.
  2. Photos of child labor explotation was shown all over the country to help change the conscience which led to the change of the laws.
  3. Photos and video of blacks being tortured nearly to death by police helped change the conscience and ultimately the law in this country to protect blacks.
As great a photo as that is it would be no different then showing a beautiful photo of a little black baby during the civil rights movement, it would touch many people tenderly but wouldn’t dehumanize the inhumane treatment of blacks by certain members of society.
