I’m wanting to make a modern-looking t-shirt with ALL 266 Popes. That sounds like a lot of work, but really I’m going to simplify it. It won’t be detailed. Probably the same face for many of them. Just graphic, minimalistic.

Anyway, I need some basic elements to remain historically faithful. Can anyone provide the times when certain aspects of Papal dress began?

Like:
The mitre
wearing white
vestments in general
and so on

Thanks

Pope St. Pius V (1566-72) was a Dominican priest and wanted to retain the colour of his white religious habit.

This was the start of the habit of popes wearing white .

Though not all would agree with this .

These are some basic ideas. Of course I’m gonna have more styles and variations and try to get it historically right. The shirt is just my trying to fit all of them on there.

If you’re looking for ideas, then look up individual popes on wikipedia. They often have a picture of that pope. For most of the popes in the last 500 or so years, they are commissioned portraits, and the dress would historically accurate. For popes from before this time, they would be “recontructive” portraits, often painted many centuries after the pope had died, and can contain a lot of anachronisms. But at least they are a good starting point.

I like it. It’s a great idea, and I like the graphic look of it. My one objection is the shapes of the heads look like they are characters on South Park. If you can change that, I think you have a winner.

My first thought was Southpark as well.

You might consider altering the design…

Just asked my son to say the first thing that comes to mind when he saw it, and his 20 year old brain said South Park.

Hahaha.

Well, I’m not sure what much I can do. Heads are circular. And I’m trying to keep it minimalistic.

Hmmm.

Maybe I’ll try to put a little more definition in them. Like narrow out the chins

I don’t want to give them eyes. That’ll make it look more cartoony, and not minimalistic.

I’m 24 and totally missed that. Lol whoops.
I never liked South Park though haha

Should it be in multiple colors? Or should I limit to maybe 3 colors?

What about monochromatic?

I’m tryijg to find a balance between detail but also an actual “hip” modern graphic, worthy of a T-shirt (back of the shirt)

I like the distribution of colors. It is definitely a modern look. Keep at it.

Is this a better style? Making it more modern but also traditional

It looks cool in the close-up, but how does it look on the whole shirt? I feel like that detail will blur out…

Agree with doing at least minimal research into each Pope, for one thing it shows that popes have come from many different lands (so, there would be varying skin tones).

And if you are doing mouths, they should be smiling not mean or sad looking!
