Making fun of other religions....?

Hi. I’m new to the forums and i’m not sure if this is the right place to post this question or not but here. Is it a sin to make fun of other people because of their religions? I’m not saying i do but i see on like movies in my school about hate crimes and stuff people saying they hate jews/muslims, etc. and i was wondering if that is considered a sin. Or just making a joke to a jewish friend or something less serious. Thanks.

Hi… welcome to the forums.

God is all about love - not hate. He told us to love everyone, even our enemies so I would say it is a sin to certainly commit hate crimes and probably a sin to say you “hate” people of other faiths. At the very least it’s very mean and will never help to win them over to Christ.

I’m not sure I follow you about the joke to a Jewish friend. Is the joke a slam on Jewish people? If so, he probably laughs to be nice but I’m betting anything he sooooo doesn’t think it’s funny.

I think it is a sin to make fun of anyone, if it is done in a spiteful or mean spirited manner. Being from a miniority, and having been discriminated against, I think it is uncharitable at best and gravely wrong at worst to spread hatred or disparage anyone. Even if the steotyping is true, or the statements are true, it is no less wrong to enage in such behavior… just my opinion.

Just look at the lessons from Columbine. The people who made fun of the killers or so called ‘losers’ were just as guilty as causing the killing as the kids who actually pulled the triggers or set off the bombs. To spread hatred, fear, or discrimination is a very serious offense. I would put it right up there with murder and mayhem.

I think we have to keep negative comment to ourselves, because others might view it differently. We think that a comment/joke is fun and harmless, but other person might think it’s offensive.

Religion, race, gender are the most sensitive issues that we have. Misunderstanding happens all the time.

I know, I’m guilty of this too, it’s easy to make comment of others especially if there are people who start it first. I try to avoid it whenever I can.

I have a really good friend who’s father is Jewish and mother is Christian. I told him for Christmas I’d get him half a menorah. He’s told me that, while he knew it would be hard, I had to fight the temptaion to confess as we walk by a phone booth.

Basically, you can joke about people and their religions IF you know them very well and you don’t cross a line about the more serious things. There are certain things you don’t joke about and we both know this. The Holocaust and Priest Scandals for example (believe it or not we’ve both had people make these jokes to us). Of course, the above posters are right, you can’t be mean or rude. If you don’t know the person that well (and I mean, you don’t know 100% how they’ll react to what your about to say) better off not saying it.

I never make fun of religions…life is too short for that. I don’t appreciate it when non-Catholics make fun of my religion, so I naturally don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable because I am Catholic and they aren’t.

That’s a perfect example of Christians who, regardless of denomination/religion, can have fun with each other like brothers and sisters…

Not to mention, makes ya want to laugh so hard you cry!
