I have recently purchased a moderate amount of shares in Johnson and Johnson (JNJ). Just yesterday, I found out that they provide quite an assortment of contraceptive products (oral and diaphragms).

Considering that JNJ also provides a substantial number of *ethical *products, am I still obliged to immediately sell my shares and give all the profits to pro-life charity?

Thanks for anyone’s help!

God bless,
Bry

Glad to see that you are concerned about this. I need to be researching where my retirement money is being invested as well.

I’ve heard advertisement on Catholic radio for Ave Maria Mutual Funds:avemariafunds.com/home.htm

Check them out for better investment options.

Yeah, I have realized that most huge healthcare product companies are likely to be providing birth control.

I’m just unsure of whether it would be immoral for me to continue making profit in these companies, considering that BC is not their main focus. It makes sense that I shouldn’t assist in Planned Parenthood’s profits, since their main focus is to be a hit man of babies! But, JNJ is a company that has mostly ethical products.

Also, I just recently heard of Ave Maria. My mother owns some of that. She said it’s making killer profit too… 18%!!

Your contribution to the evil is remote, and it is not your intention to do evil, so there is no clear-cut answer. My suggestion is to pray about it.

I think this is a very good question of ethical investments. I think a Catholic would avoid this in good conscience if it was disclosed, and when one buys shares from a company one should research what the company does and what products it markets and sells.

Isn’t there companies out there that have ethical investments in mid for it’s clients? No tobacco, no oil or mining, no pornography? I’d research a company like that.

emp.
