Making new Catholic songs

These days, other than being a writer and studying hard to maintain a strong creative presence, I, from time to time, write songs about our Lord, Jesus Christ, the angels, the saints, sometimes even the Popes. And I was wondering, since I’m not a musician of the highest degree, nor have a diploma concentrating in that area, would my presenting these songs to the local parish be acceptable, or is it perhaps something I shouldn’t be touching?

Don’t touch it. We don’t need anymore campfire sing songs flooding the church. Thank you!
 
Hey, very cool that you are doing that. Although, I sometimes write songs and compose music I have never written a song about the Lord, or about the faith. So, I admire that you are able to do that.
 
I’m sure as long as your music is glorifying God, it is pleasing to Him; however, I can’t comment on the wisdom of submitting original pieces to your parish. I just don’t know how that all works.
 
This is a talent. The church says: give your talent and time to serve the church. I believe you can show your songs to your local priest and see what he says. Maybe they are very beautiful, since most of the songs sang at the mass are very beautiful. Who can say that we have enough songs and that maybe it is time to add some new ones instead of repeating always the same old ones. I really encourage you to show them to your priest and see what he thinks about it.👍👍 No everybody has that special talent and dedication and i guess you are one of those special people that has such a special talent.

Yeah, because a guy with an interest in the warrior monks of the church, and the gregorian chants, definitely wants more campfire songs. Cause that’s all that can be expected of me. :rolleyes:

Just so you know, a diploma doesn’t necessarily make one a better musician ;)… take it from someone who has worked with “musicians” who tout their music degrees left or right, yet don’t have much to show for it. A person who has had musical training, although maybe not conservatory or college degrees can still be just as good or even better musician than those who get their degrees. I know and work with many. So, to me, I could care less about the degrees, give me quality and the goods. That’s not to say that all musicians with degrees are lousy… far from it. As there are many good musicians who come out of those institutions. It’s just not always a good litmus test as to who should be respected as a musician and composer and shouldn’t be used to snub those without diplomas or degrees.

Is it my understanding that you do have musical training? So you do understand at least the basics of theory and composition, correct? I wouldn’t tell you to not attempt to go further with this. See what you can compose. Maybe take it to a teacher of composition to see what could be improved upon or even just take some extra lessons in theory, harmony and composition. If you are already a musician, that shouldn’t be too difficult. And it seems that since you are very interested in the Gregorian chants, etc., you would want to compose in the spirit of that rather than to deviate from sacred composition. Although writing religious songs along with sacred music is not wrong either, as it is always nice to have well-composed religious music.
