Hi 🙂

I read about the St Philomena cord…
miraclerosarymission.org/philocord.html

I think this is a really good devotion 🙂 and I’d love to get a cord like that. However, I don’t really have the opportunity to order anything online, and I don’t know/don’t think the Catholic store near me sells this.

So I was wondering… would it be fine for me to just make the cord? (and then get it properly blessed). Can’t I just take some white and red cotton or wool threads, and knit them together into a cord?

however, it says on another website that it should be passed or sent by one person to another… is this part of what the Church says about it? would it be wrong to just make one?

thanks 🙂

I’ve never heard of this cord. I have a question though. Can a cord be cut down and worn around the wrist instead of the waist?

Today I accidentally banged my toe into a bed made of wood. It is as you might imagine feeling lousy. I wear a St Philomena Cord around my waist under the clothes and have been lying down with another St Philomena wound around my foot.

You can put the St Philomena Cord on injured and/or painful parts of the body.

I have a story about something that happened to me, regarding the St Philomena Cord.

**The stroller **
When I first moved into my current home, I was given a stroller which I used for transporting my daughter Anne. Although Anne was actually by then about four years of age, unfortunately a stroller was an absolute necessity if I was to get any shopping done, because when I took her to the shops down the street, she threw tantrums on the footpath due to her autism. Two weeks after we moved in, the lady who sold me the house came to our home with a very good stroller which her daughter no longer had a need for.

There was something tied to the handle-bar which resembled a Saint Philomena Cord. I showed it to my family and they all thought that it was a Saint Philomena Cord. None of my family guessed otherwise. When I asked the lady what the cord tied to the handle bar was there for, she looked puzzled and she clearly did not know what it was or how it had got there. It seems that it had not been tied to the handlebar when she got it from her daughter’s house. The lady did not have knowledge of Saint Philomena devotions such as the Saint Philomena Cord and she was far too serious a person to play games in order to try and deceive about a matter like this.

I accepted the stroller with gratitude, but I was also surprised because the lady knew that I had already been given another stroller two weeks earlier by her husband. Because of the cord that was attached to the handle bar I understood that Saint Philomena had something to do with this gift. I wondered why Saint Philomena was giving me this stroller, in view of the fact that I already had one and did not appear to need it. About lunch time I took Anne to the shops in the old stroller and with her weight and the weight of the shopping, it broke just as we were arriving back home. I picked up the broken stroller, my daughter and the shopping and went into my house. Saint Philomena appears to have arranged a new stroller for me a few hours in advance, because she knew that the old stroller was ready to break. Because of this I was able to take the new stroller with Anne to the school in the afternoon to pick up the other children. Without this stroller I would have had serious problems picking up the other children from school, because I could not leave Anne at home by herself, nor could I find anyone to look after her while I went there. (At the time of this incident, I had been a devotee of Saint Philomena for several years.)

Special note: A Saint Philomena Cord is the red and white cord which is blessed and worn around the waist under the clothing to honour Saint Philomena and to seek her protection and intercession.

The story above is one of the stories in my book:** Help from Heaven (Answers to Prayer)**, which has been put into a print version and also can be read free on-line at:

There are many stories of answers to prayer and some articles and poems in the book, and I always welcome more accounts of answers to prayer, to add to it. It is an apostolate. It is not a commercial venture.

It would not be proper to cut a St Philomena Cord which has already been blessed. If you wanted a St Philomena cord, which is worn about the wrist, it would have to be specially made in the smaller size and then blessed.

There are some St Philomena wrist cords available at this link:

I read somewhere that once you buy a blessed item, it ceases to be blessed. Would this be the case with the cords?

I have heard the the same thing regarding blessed objects i.e. that once you buy a blessed item, it ceases to be blessed.

I am not an expert regarding the question. Someone else might be able to give some information, but I offer the following advice.

The best thing to do is to order a sacramental e.g. a St Philomena Cord or perhaps a Miraculous Medal. Make a request that the sacramental only be blessed after the purchase.

In that way the item belongs to you, and you are getting your own item blessed.

Something very important
Learn ways to help the Holy Souls in Purgatory and read inspiring stories of their powerful intercession for their benefactors. Then let your friends and family know where to find the link for the page and encourage them to pray for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and also to ask their intercession.

Going back to the original question, yes, it would be perfectly appropriate to make your own. It should be a natural fiber (cotton or wool have been suggested, but another natural fiber would also be fine) and the red and white should appear in approximately equal parts. When I made cords, I used cotton yarn (the “sugar & cream” kind that’s used for pot holders) and braided it like a friendship bracelet. Super easy.

Here is another technique

You need two thick balls of yarn, one coloured red and the other coloured white.

Crochet the red and white yarn together in chain stitch* for the required length of the cord.

Take the row of chain stitch off the crocheting hook and secure the stitching with a knot (so that it won’t unravel.)

Then tie two knots in the cord, about one inch in from one of the cord ends. (The two knots represent virginity and martyrdom.)

*(The red and the white yarn are crocheted over the crocheting hook at the same time as though they were only one strand of yarn.)

This video shows you how to do chain stitch: youtube.com/watch?v=OtmOEzm_OXQ

The important part is to get the cord blessed.

Below is one of the stories in my book Help from Heaven (Answers to Prayer) which can be read free on-line at the following link.

Electrocuted!
Joanna’s younger brother and sister both had the bad habit of putting their wet hands on the electric light switches. One night Joanna’s mother received a striking sign from Saint Philomena and straight after that, she heard Joanna scream. When Joanna turned on the light she got electrocuted. Joanna felt the 240 Volts travel right down her arm, despite this she was alright and no real harm was done. Joanna’s mother attributes this protection to Saint Philomena. A priest who heard about this incident quipped that “You could say that she is a girl with good connections!”

This story shows how St Philomena protects her clients.

The person’s real name is not Joanna. (The person who is the subject of the story is one of my five children.) We have a great devotion to St Philomena in our family which started when I was 20 years of age in September, 1976.

You can read more about how I came to know St Philomena on the following link:

Here’s mine. Hopefully to use a “Jewish expression” it’s kosher! Being a mid-aged man, I didn’t do so great trying to crochet, so I made this in my vise in the garage. I have a knot on each end to keep it from unraveling and 2 on one end for martyrdom and purity. I’ll be getting this blessed soon. (unless it’s not “kosher”!)

blessings,
HA

Very nice! 🙂 I had a St. Philomena Cord long ago, but sadly it was lost. I’m so glad we’re allowed to make them…as soon as I can, I’ll get some yarn. Thanks so much! :extrahappy:

I now have it blessed and have worn it over 2 weeks so far.
btw, today was/is her feast day! Reading “the wonder worker” book today.
