I used to sew all the time and then when I found out that some of the things I was making were cheaper pre-made I pretty much quit except for the few times we couldn’t find something we wanted.

Even on sale fabric is often more expensive than pre-made but, there is a satisfaction in having made it yourself! I will still make some things by myself. I have some really nice fabric I need to make into a skirt, just finding the energy now for me is a problem.

One piece of advise, do not purchase one of those cheap machines, they are light weight and “walk” as you are sewing and that is very frustrating for an experienced seamstress let alone a brand new one! You don’t need an expensive machine, just one that is heavier and has several stitches on it.

Also, go window shopping at JoAnn’s and sign up for their mailing! Lots of good coupons there and to stay on their list you don’t even have to purchase anything just take your ad in and have them scan it - that will keep you on the list!

Hobby Lobby also has a fabric department so check there for their sales as well. Then there is Hancock Fabric (don’t like my local one). All of them will have pattern sales $1.99 a pattern for certain brands. As a new seamstress stick with McCall’s and Simplicity - those vintage patterns someone was looking at on-line will be pretty complicated so don’t venture there until you have been sewing for awhile. I know I helped my daughter sew some dresses for “A Rebel Without a Cause” when she was costumer for the play at her high school. We had found some vintage patterns in the pattern books, we were excited as that would make them pretty authentic! I am relatively experienced and spent several hours just playing with the fabric until I figured out how to sew it, then I had to teach the girls who were wearing them how to put them on!

So, in summary, get yourself on JoAnn’s and Hancock’s mailing lists, sign up for Hobby Lobby’s on-line ad and you should be a step ahead as far as keeping the costs down!

Thanks, Brenda!
You are most welcome. Also, Hobby Lobby has sewing classes so check them out, this might be just what you need to get your feet wet in the wonderful art of fabric! (of course I am assuming you have a Hobby Lobby near you, an advantage to them is they refuse to be open on Sundays so their workers can worship as they see fit!)

Oh, and your JoAnn’s and/or Hancock’s may have sewing classes. Mine are too small for that purpose but the ladies who work at my JoAnn’s are quite willing to help us with anything and love to see our finished products (like my daughter’s prom dress, yes, for us it ended up being one of those “I can’t find anything I like and I have an idea in my head” so we did it ourselves.) I have also sewn my good friend’s Mother of the Bride Dress because she is petite with a large bust and it was really hard to find anything that would fit properly that was appropriate so, using two different patterns and lots of fittings I made her dress.

I’ll have to check these out. I don’t know that there’s a Hobby Lobby near us, but there’s a JoAnn’s very close.

I can sew but don’t sew any of our clothes. I’m at SAHM so time is cheaper than money, that being said, I can find good enough bargains on clothes that sewing them would be at least twice as much just for supplies. If you’re looking for cheap clothes, I highly recommend getting acquainted with the clothing stores in your area and their clearance areas. I find most of our stuff at JC Penney, Target, Kohls, and Old Navy. If you shop it right, you can get most of your things for 75% or more off…my last shopping trip for me I paid $13 for a cute skirt and two shirts. I would have paid more than that for the fabric alone. As far as modesty goes–invest in some neutral camis and you’re set! 👍

Now I do sew some things…pillows, curtains…things like that. But I also take shortcuts sometimes. For instance I bought some cute fabric for my daughter’s playroom and make two floor pillow slipcovers and a valance–it was about $16. But when it came time to make curtains for the sidelights in our foyer, I shopped Target clearance and found a single panel curtain that I liked. I cut it in half, hemmed the sides, and made a pocket on the bottom and had my sidelight curtains for about $11.

So shop around…if you want to save money sometimes you make it but sometimes you just shop! 😛

Do you have a pattern that you used? I’ve been wanting to make some curtains FOREVER and I’d love any easy ideas/tips!!! 😃
Yes - I used a pattern - actually I just got my sewing machine out tonight (had 15 ten year old girls over for our daughter’s birthday party. They “made dresses”) and the pattern was in there. It is Simplicity Home decorating #8353. I bought it a looonngg time ago so I don’t know if it is still available or not but it was sooo easy! There are two different roman shade options and three valance options. I made the easiest one.

Hi Nicole:
Sewing is fun. Making you own clothes can be rewarding. My mom was a streamstress. She taught me to sew at an early age. I enjoy it now as I make desingers wedding pillows and baby pillows. I love it. Its a hobby and I earn a few dollars in sales each time.

I hadn’t adventured in making my own clothes but soon I will be doing it. I love to sew. When I was a little girl, my late mom taught me to make doll dresses. This is how I learn. It was fun. Now that I am married and just about 10 years ago, I began to do crafts and one day started making pillows as for gifts and now it became a small business.

I have a website: cookiespillows.com

I have to add more pictures to soon. There is only a few. Go there and take peek. If you should know anyone who would an order or even a baby pillow order with photo album to match just send me an e-mail @ Pillowmaker25@aol.com

I will be more than happy to make them.

I been doing crafts and other things for the last 14 years. I find it fun and entertaining.

Enjoy sewing. You can make most anything once you get the hang of it.

God Bless and enjoy!

😉 House Arrest: Hi
You know you can order material on the internet…just google for fabric and a list of sites will come up. Some of them you can purchase bulk. The prices are great. I have been doing it, and I find it much better than the stores…JoAnn Fabrics material is nice but to expensive…so I shop around. Maybe there are mills in your area, so check them out. They do much in personal buy outs too.

Ok, hope this helps. Have a great day in sewing…

Hi - I have been sewing since I was 12y.o. I like sewing. I have a huge tub of fabric that i can choose from to make whatever comes to mind. I have recently been inching my way towards making my own clothing. I have an odd shape ( think egg w/legs! L) so i’ve always had to bring in my pants or shorten my skirts or extend something. Now, I’m just going to start sewing my own clothes, because i dont like alot of wht is out there on the market right now. I’m not opposed to buying clothing, but…just dont like what i’ve seen.

But…sewing your own clothing can be a really relaxing event. I sew my dog a new scarf for every holiday season. Its a start in the right direction. And…sewing is so much fun…i love to watch how things come out in the end.

I’ve been sewing for…wow, almost 14 years now. I love sewing my own clothes, especially because I am hard to fit. I’ll be honest, though–I don’t think it’s cheaper. If you’re used to buying full price clothes from high ends stores it would be cheaper, but I don’t get that feeling from your post. The fabric for a pair of pants often runs me $10-$15, and then once you add in a zipper, lining, a button, and the thread, you’re talking the price of two or three pairs at the thrift store. And that doesn’t even take the time into account.

So why do I sew? Simply because I like it. If I’m going to be doing something, it may as well be productive. And because I am hard to fit, I often like the clothes I wind up with better than store-bought ones.

If you do want to sew your own clothes, I’m going to suggest you just jump in. Get a pattern for a skirt to start with, as skirts are quite easy. Just follow the instructions. I was so scared the first time I sewed jeans, because people had been telling me how hard it was. Well, it wasn’t. I’ve always been good at following directions, but I had no problems. It wasn’t any harder IMO!

Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

I can sew a straight line. That is about it. LOL I have made curtains and a few baby clothes and a few decorative items for the house… table runners and such.

I find cross-stitch to be my favorite relaxing past time. Sewing on a machine frustrates me to no end.

I have two daughters who are still at home and I am really picky about what they can wear. Most cothes that you buy retail are so immodest. I spent around $65 dollars school clothes shopping this year for them. How? I went to GoodWill. We are fortunate to have two that are relatively close and they are nice stores. We went a little nuts on their dollar tuesdays and found tons of sweat shirts and blouses for them as well as denim skirts, jeans, dress pants, etc. It was awesome! That doesn’t count the socks/underwear/etc.

Steph

Thanks, Sophie!

I think another reason I’m a little hesitant is that I’d be starting with no experience or foundation of sewing knowledge. Your post made me feel so much better about it!

I think I’ll start with a simple skirt and see what happens!
