exactly. i doubted if any of these Popes contributed any teachings to the Church during their times, they were too busy doing other things.

however, when did the doctrine of papal infabillity (that doesn’t sound right-sp?) begin?

i agree with redrosetea, the kings and queens exhibited a lot of control over who was Pope for political reasons.

The doctrine was formalized in the 19th century.

It began when Christ founded His Church.

Other people might not agree but I think it started with Christ giving Peter the Keys of the Kingdom the power to loose and bind…

i looked it up because i had always thought it began with Christ and his Church and as paul said, it was formalized in 1870 with vatican I.

thanks for your help!

I read somewhere we had about 7 bad popes…perhaps what I read was untrue and I can’t recall where I read it…but in 2000 years 7 isn’t an earth shattering number

yes, i think you are right. there were 7 or 8 bad or controversial Popes.

that is not too bad out of 2000 years as you say, especially when you see how civilization developed through those 2000 years and the challenges that the Catholic Churches faced.

i had never thought of how the Plague would effect the Church, but someone brought it up in another thread. the Church lost many priests and bishops i am sure.
