Malaysian churches attacked in row over use of ‘Allah’

Three Malaysian churches have been targeted with firebombs, leaving one badly damaged, in an escalating dispute over the use of the word “Allah” by non-Muslims.
Muslim groups held protests outside 10 mosques across the nation Friday, enraged by a court ruling last week that gave permission for “Allah” to be used as a translation for the Christian God.
Police deployed officers to patrol churches and mosques after a church in suburban Kuala Lumpur was set ablaze in a midnight attack that gutted its ground floor.
Molotov cocktails were thrown into the compounds of two other churches in pre-dawn raids, but did not cause serious damage.
Prime Minister Najib Razak condemned the attacks which he said could destroy racial harmony in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority country with ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities which has seen racial conflict in the past.
“As a multiracial community we must practice respect for one another… it cannot come under threat from anybody,” he told state media, pledging action to prevent any further incidents.
Police chief Musa Hassan quashed reports of further attacks on churches and cars displaying Christian symbols, saying they were false and that action would be taken against rumour-mongers.
“The situation is under control… please do not politicise a sensitive issue, you are playing with people’s emotions,” he said.
In the capital, a few dozen demonstrators gathered outside the national mosque and another in the Malay enclave of Kampung Baru, chanting “God is Great” and “We will defend the dignity and rights of Muslims.”
“We have lived in peace with all religions but we want other religions to respect us and the use of the word Allah, which is exclusive to Muslims,” said organiser Arman Azha Abu Hanifah.
Police said that as well as the Kuala Lumpur demonstrations, there had been gatherings at mosques in three other states but that they had been brief and dispersed quickly.
Tensions were heightened last week when the High Court ruled in favour of the Catholic “Herald” newspaper which has used “Allah” in its Malay-language section.
In a long-running legal battle, the government has argued the word should be used only by Muslims.
The ruling was suspended on Wednesday pending an appeal, after the government argued the decision could cause racial conflict.
The first of the firebombing assaults struck the three-storey Metro Tabernacle church, part of the Assemblies of God movement, leaving its ground floor a charred and twisted wreck.
“Witnesses saw four people smash the glass and throw incendiaries into the church building. They came on two motorcycles,” church leader Peter Yeow told AFP, warning other churches to “double their guard” against any attacks.
Several hours later, the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Kuala Lumpur’s southwest was targeted, parish priest Philip Muthu said.
“I was awoken by men riding on motorcycles who threw a kerosene bomb into the church compound,” he told AFP, adding that the fire damaged part of the grounds.
A Molotov cocktail was also thrown into the front porch of the nearby protestant Life Chapel church.
“The bomb damaged the wall and plants in the area but thankfully no one was injured,” said church elder Wong Sai Wong.
Religion and language are sensitive issues in multiracial Malaysia, which experienced deadly race riots in 1969.
The row over the use of “Allah” is among a string of religious disputes that have erupted in recent years, straining relations between Malays and ethnic Chinese and Indians who fear the country is being “Islamised.”
About 10 percent of Malaysians are Christians, including some 850,000 Catholics. More than half of those Catholics are from indigenous groups, most of whom live in the Borneo island states and who mainly speak Malay.

What this incident shows really is this.

1 - The muslims KNOW that the word allah is the unique NAME of their deity.
2 - It is NOT a noun for the word ‘god’ cos the arabic noun (the source of the word being used in the malay language) for ‘god’ is ILAH.
3 - Muslims detest using the word to represent ‘god’ because it means that hence the animal deities, guards of hell worshipped as deities, tree deities can ALL be called allah and bring insult to islam’s deiy.

This problem arises today because to the majority malay-muslims living in malaysia, there is no ‘god’ but allah therefore everytime they refer to god, they use the unique name of their deity. Over the years, this name became synonymous with the word for ‘god’. And since the country speaks only malay, the non-malays who must also speak the malay language are ‘forced’ by circumstances to call THEIR deity as allah in their daily conversation.

**In Indonesia however, the correct linguistic noun of TUHAN is adopted. The catholic priest in malaysia made a BIG mistake asking for usage of the name of islam’s deity to represent god. It is seemingly a wise decision to him when in actual fact it is an absolute blasphemy made in utter folly. All Christians should speak out against the usage, not just the muslims who are now forming angry mobs.
**

Even the arabic calligraphic writing for allah shows it to be a name and not a noun nor a combination of nouns.

muslims are not the only allowed to use the arabic language, which many christian rites use and even use the word allah in their liturgy.

I was under the understanding that Muslims believed that people of the Book worshiped the same God only that Christians suffered from corrupt teachings:confused:

It was a Christian church and not a pagan Hindu or other place of worship firebombed.

*Allah *is not a name; it is an Arabic noun meaning ‘God’ used by all Arabic speakers regardless of religion. Muslims do not believe in a ‘different’ God, such polytheistic thinking is alien to Islam.

*Ilah *is a different noun and means ‘deity’ or ‘god’ with a small ‘g’, not ‘God’. *Allah *can never be used to refer to tree deities, but *ilah *can.

Exactly, Kadaveri. Allah is the common noun used by all Arabic-speakers, not Malaysians (non-Arabic speakers). That is the heart of this conflict: The Muslims in Malaysia feel that it is THEIR word only, because the native Malay word is different, so the Christians should use that to avoid “offending” the Muslims or looking like they’re proselytizing the Muslims or whatever. I don’t buy it at all, but so the argument goes.

It is STILL nothing to burn down churches over. What a bunch of barbarians. And Muslims wonder why we hate their stupid, intolerant religion so much! This kind of action is why.

I don’t see what difference it makes if we’re talking about the word in the Malay language, as it’s a loanword from Arabic anyway.

And there’s no need to blow this out of proportion to excuse anti-Muslim prejudices. Just a couple of weeks ago the mosque about 5 miles from where I live was destroyed in an anti-Muslim arsonist attack, so are you going to declare your hatred for that stupid intolerant religion called Christianity? The words speck, eye and plank come to mind.

That’s precisely the point. It is not because of a dispute about whether Allah is the same God as Dewa (the Malay word, according to Google Translate). It is because the Malay Muslims think they “own” the word and nobody else should use it, because it only came with the Islamicization of the country. And they’re using this religious difference as an excuse to terrorize Malay Christians, and it is unacceptable.
And there’s no need to blow this out of proportion to excuse anti-Muslim prejudices.
Blow it out of proportion?! Excuse me? And when the Jihadists in other parts of Muslim-majority Asia that we are all told is so peaceful kill and behead little Christian girls and promise to kill more Christians (as in Indonesia), what will you say then? Islam and the Qur’an are the reason for that, too. I don’t think anyone is born wanting to behead others or destroy their holy places for any reason. I blame Islam, not Muslims as a whole.
Just a couple of weeks ago the mosque about 5 miles from where I live was destroyed in an anti-Muslim arsonist attack, so are you going to declare your hatred for that stupid intolerant religion called Christianity? The words speck, eye and plank come to mind.
It depends. Find me verses in the Holy Bible that tell Christians to destroy mosques, and then you can say whatever you want. Until then, enough with the crocodile tears.

Again, I don’t hate Muslims at all, but I absolutely loathe Islam. It ruins otherwise perfectly wonderful people and societies.

When I goggled the first hits were from Stormfront so i didn’t check any further. In any case Western Europe and UK are not Christian strongholds the odds seem to be about zero that a mob in the name of Christ can do what was done in Malaysia and not be as big of a story as the Christmas terrorist who burned himself.

This is the epitome of dumb and dumber.

Since the earliest days of Christian texts in Arabic (admittedly the language of the Qur’an, and the Christian texts used the same Qur’anic Arabic), Christians have used the Arabic name for God, Allah, which translates roughly as “the god” as opposed to those other gods who are merely idols. Arabic Christians routinely, along with their Muslim and Jewish co-lingualists, say “In sha’a’llah” or “if God has willed it”.

How these Malay late comers to Islam get the idea that what has been standard among Muslims and Christians and Jews for over 1000 years in the Near East is not good enough for them, I have no idea.

What a bunch of bozos.
Murderous bozos.

Let us all pray for their enlightenment and for the good offices of the civil authorities to protect the Christians of Malaysia. Good Lord deliver them.

That’s not right, but as someone else alluded to: Where is the evidence that this done by Christians or for sectarian reasons? Europe is not exactly a hotbed of Christian radicalism.
And it’s really quite silly to quote an article on the murder of 3 Christians by a Muslim in revenge for the murder of 70 Muslims by a Christian militia as proof that it’s Islam causing all the problems in Indonesia.
What article were you reading? Yes, this particular incident was preceded by sectarian clashes, but I will quote you the relevant section of the article, so that you can stop pretending that you’re a news source unto yourself. Here is the what the actual news source has to say (emphasis mine)
According to the prosecutor Payaman SH, Hasanuddin had asked his men to get “at least a hundred Christian heads in Poso” as compensation for the Muslims who died in the violent sectarian clashes that had occurred between 1999 and 2001 in Poso itself. Clashes between Muslims and Christians had left more than a thousand dead and driven even more out of their homes. What triggered the violence has not been fully elucidated.
As is stated elsewhere in the article, the perpetrators of the horrific attack on the Islamic school in 2000 received justice, in fact, FAR MORE justice than these Islamic butchers received for murdering three innocent little girls who simply had the bad fortune to be Christians in a Muslim country. This shows the inherent unfairness of the legal systems in Islamic countries, but that is for another thread, I suppose. Anyway, in case you missed it, here is what happened to the Christians who perpetrated that attack in 2000 (see bold):
However, tensions between the two religious communities flared up again in September 2006 when three Catholics were summarily sentenced to death and executed for an attack against an Islamic school in 2000 in which 70 people died.
So what exactly is the problem with this ruling? What was this insane murderer taking “revenge” for by beheading three little girls several years after the fact? The fact that the Christians were found guilty and executed? Is THAT what made him so mad? Face it, Islam tells its followers that they are literally worth more than non-Muslims. That’s why the penalties for killing a non-Muslim are so less severe than if a non-Muslim kills a Muslim. We see that in this case, where the Christians were executed (I won’t argue about the justice of that sentence, by the way; it is never okay to murder people, so they were clearly in the wrong) but the Muslim terrorist lives on to inspire others. In the article, it says that the Islamic terrorist told his men to “get at least 100 Christian heads” in response to the violence in the area. How that is supposed to be a constructive response to violence, I don’t know, but there you have it…Islam is not a constructive force, anyway. It is a destructive one.

Do you still want to tell me that this isn’t about Islam? It most certainly is. It is about Islam’s sense of entitlement to rule over everyone and everything in any land it has ever touched. If three Christians or one Christian does something wrong and is punished (or even if they do NOTHING wrong, but someone starts a rumor against them, like what happens routinely in Pakistan under that country’s ridiculous “blasphemy” law), then the whole community must suffer anyway. It is absolute garbage. Completely indefensible. It is exactly this sort of treatment that Muslims are now whining and crying about, only it is not as bad in the West as what the Christians go through in the East. I am disgusted that you point your finger and say “see, Christians are at the root of the problem” when you know full well (since you read the article) that they are being used as a scapegoat for violence (unless you know of some concrete link these three little Christian girls had to the three Christians who were put to death in 2006…?), no different than the famous “land disputes” in Egypt where monks are kidnapped and tortured to try to get them to convert to Islam (that’s a strange behavior for land dispute, don’t you think?), or in Turkey where Christians can be charged with “insulting Turkishness” for being evangelists or even for bringing up the well-documented attempted genocide of Assyrian and Armenian Christians by the Turks. These are all very strange behaviors from Muslim-majority states, and especially ones that claim to be “progessive”, “secular”, “tolerant”, etc. like Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, etc. What is the common thread between all of them? Messed up laws, based on ISLAM. Islam is entirely the problem, not only in Indonesia, but everywhere where Muslims have any political power over others.

Perhaps a Muslim member of the forum can explain this in light of the common insistence that Islam is a “religion of peace” because the words and the actions appear to say different things.

*Allah *is not a name; it is an Arabic noun meaning ‘God’ used by all Arabic speakers regardless of religion. Muslims do not believe in a ‘different’ God, such polytheistic thinking is alien to Islam.

The above is right except that Allah is the personal name of God in Islam, i.e. the One God worshipped by the Muslims.

There is no harm in other nations using that name for God, as some christians do in middle east Arab countries. The western christians say that Allah is not the real God and that Muslims do not believe in the same God as the christians. That may be true if the christians consider Jesus as the God. Otherwise, Muslims believe in the same God as the God of Abraham, Issac, jacob, Moses and God of Jesus. Jesus had a God to whom he prayed.

The Muslims should not damage any church. That is a sin of the highest order. They should protect all places of worship. If any one attacks mosques or churches or synagogues or temples then that is not a Muslim. Or he/she is an ignorant Muslim.

If other faith people use the word “Allah” for the God, there is no harm. It should be allowed and encouraged… as long as they do not start abusing the word “Allah” and I am sure the Malayan chritians were not abusing the word “Allah.”

The Malayan Muslims are ignorant in many other ways too. This issue of the use of word Allah is another proof of their silliness and ignorance. Perhaps they believe that they have a copyright for the word “Allah.” The Malayan Muslims will suffer much under the influence of their misguided religious leaders.

Planten, you apparently know more than Ms Kadaveri who obviously doesn’t know enough about islam to call herself a muslim. Islam’s deity has a personal name and it is allah. Over the years, this name has come to mean synonymously with the noun ‘god’. And even the ‘christians’ living in the middle east have come to accept it as such.

But this is clearly not right. Because as I have already pointed out to blind kadaveri and associates, even the calligraphic writing of the word reveals it to be a unique name and not a noun.

Some people don’t even bother to ask, don’t bother to search and speak as though they know everything. These are the people who are causing us pains today because of their ignorance, and misleading of others people die for their lack of knowledge.

The prolific use of the name - allah does not imply its right of use as a noun. Obviously, tradition weighs so heavily on certain people that their basic senses are thrown out the window. And when their errors are pointed out, they draw a total blank and call you stupid.

Christians should STOP Using the word ‘allah’ synonymous with god, because it is blasphemous.

It is a common understanding amongst muslims, that the word ‘allah’ means ‘the-god’. It is made up of 2 distinct arabic words, ‘al’ meaning ‘the’ and ‘ilah’ meaning ‘god’.

What this means is that there is already an arabic word for the noun – god. Which is ILAH.

So the question is, why then do muslims use ‘allah’ synonymously for the regular noun of ‘god’ instead of using ‘ilah’?

To answer this, we must understand that the word ‘allah’ is declared as the personal name of the islam’s entity of worship. This is a thoroughly accepted understanding amongst Islamic academics.

The quran quotes in 17:110‘“Call upon Allah, or Call upon Rahman; By whatever Name ye call upon him, (it is well):

Next, note the Islamic call ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ which means, ‘There is no god but allah’. Now try substituting the word ‘allah’ with ‘the-god’ and you have ‘There is no god but the god’. Which is evidently syntactically in error unless one accepts the word ‘allah’ to mean ‘god’. Which would instead make the statement rather absurd since it would then mean ‘There is no god but god’.

Calligraphic writings of allah and god is also entirely different. See: www.arabbible.com/t-Allah.aspx

What Christians should ask themselves is, so what now? Even Christians in the middle east refer to god as allah? Remember this, in a large community of muslims, there is NO REPLACEMENT for the word ‘god’ EXCEPT allah. Over these thousands of years the name of allah has been morphed to mean ‘god’ due to constant reference and ignorance. But some simple checks and logic will reveal to you that the word is shockingly misplaced.

‘GOD’ is a title conferred on the one and only omnipotent creator. Just like ‘President’ is a title. If I say ‘Obama’ is President, it probably would be correct for the next 3 years but only within the boundaries of USA, but if I say ‘McCain’ is President, then I must have either made a typographical error or I am seriously delusional.

“There is no President but McCain”? Sounds like treason to you? Well it is, at least spiritually speaking (‘there is no god but allah”?). It has always been treason. Treason from one who has always wanted to be god.

Let me know if you think this understanding is in error, but only with valid points of argument.

Hi all,

Before each side goes on to lambast each other, please recognise that this is as much a religious issue as it is a political issue, more so the latter.

A few points to note,
  1. the main Islamic party - Parti Islam seMalaysia (PAS), actually accepts the ruling from the government, especially for followers of the Abrahamic faiths.
  2. in the Western parts of Malaysia where the people are not ethnically Malay, Indian or Chinese, the word “Allah” has been used to refer to God. “Allah” is actually a term that is also used in Indonesia. But since Indonesia is so big, it is not unusual for different parts of Indonesia to use different terms (Tuhan/ Allah)
  3. the political system in Malaysia is race-based (which is linked also to religion). The ruling Barisan Nasional had recently suffered a major defeat in its 2008 General Elections especially losing a lot of Malay-Muslim swing votes which went to the Opposition Pakatan Rakyat Coalition.
  4. the ruling coalition is in disarray especially with leadership dogfights (in MIC, MCA) driving support in the other direction.
  5. because race is closely-linked to religion, such concessions also seem to be a slap into the face of Malays.
  6. the presiding judge was a Chinese and not-Muslim.
  7. proselytism of non-Christians (not evangelism) from Christian groups IS a problem in the region.
I am not from Malaysia, but from Singapore. It is a small island (smaller than NYC) below Malaysia that was kicked out of the Federation in 1965 because the ruling political party here was vehemently opposed to race-based politics.

Does it seem so much about theology (disagreements between a word use) or politics (making use of religion to get supporters back)?

Christians should STOP Using the word ‘allah’ synonymous with god, because it is blasphemous.
No, it isn’t. It’s not a proper name when Christians use it (we have had threads here before where Arab Christians explained how the different religious communities use and view the word; it is very interesting). It really is the noun used in Arabic for “God”, whether or not you also believe it to be a proper name (as Muslims apparently do).
It is a common understanding amongst muslims, that the word ‘allah’ means ‘the-god’. It is made up of 2 distinct arabic words, ‘al’ meaning ‘the’ and ‘ilah’ meaning ‘god’.
There is some debate as to where exactly “Allah” comes from, as there is some grammatical trouble with getting “Allah” from “al-Illah” if you go any deeper than just assuming it is a contraction.
So the question is, why then do muslims use ‘allah’ synonymously for the regular noun of ‘god’ instead of using ‘ilah’?
Because, as you yourself recognize, they see “Allah” as a proper name - a personal pronoun as well as a noun.

Um…but that IS what it means. “La ilaha illa Allah” means “there is no god but God”. In Muhammad’s context, surrounded by Jews and gnostic Christians, but also many pagans among his own people, it would make sense to declare this to say that “Allah” (which, yes, was the name of the supreme diety in the pre-Islamic, pagan Arab pantheon) is the only one of the many gods being worshiped that is worthy of worship.,
Calligraphic writings of allah and god is also entirely different. See: www.arabbible.com/t-Allah.aspx
Because they aren’t the same word…why is this so difficult to understand? We Christians may talk about the gods of other religions, which don’t receive the reverential capitalization given to God because they are something other than what we recognize as God. In fact, you’ll see in many translations of the Bible that GOD is given in all capitals. It’s not an accident, just as it is not an accident that Arabic speakers use “Allah”.
What Christians should ask themselves is, so what now? Even Christians in the middle east refer to god as allah? Remember this, in a large community of muslims, there is NO REPLACEMENT for the word ‘god’ EXCEPT allah.
As it is for Christians, too, and not only Arabic speakers (have you ever met a Maltese person? They use “Alla”, because their language ultimately descends from Arabic). Again, where is the problem? Just because we use the same word does not mean we have the same theology. If I pray in Arabic, I will use Allah and not feel in the least bit uncomfortable with it.
Over these thousands of years the name of allah has been morphed to mean ‘god’ due to constant reference and ignorance. But some simple checks and logic will reveal to you that the word is shockingly misplaced.
Um…no?
‘GOD’ is a title conferred on the one and only omnipotent creator. Just like ‘President’ is a title. If I say ‘Obama’ is President, it probably would be correct for the next 3 years but only within the boundaries of USA, but if I say ‘McCain’ is President, then I must have either made a typographical error or I am seriously delusional.
This is an awful analogy.
“There is no President but McCain”? Sounds like treason to you? Well it is, at least spiritually speaking (‘there is no god but allah”?). It has always been treason. Treason from one who has always wanted to be god.
So does the fact that “Allah” was used by Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews to refer to “God” (“capital g” God) before Islam ever existed mean nothing to you? Muhammad/Islam did not invent this word. He picked it up from everyone around him - from the Christians and Jews as the name for GOD, from the pagans as the word for their supreme creator-god. It is the term that he could use to reach all communities, even if not all communities understand it the same. This is the same situation as there is today in the middle east regarding “Allah”.
Let me know if you think this understanding is in error, but only with valid points of argument.
.
I think it is a deeply flawed argument, which perhaps makes more sense to an American than to others as we by and large subscribe to either a monotheistic faith or no faith. Not so in Arabia in the time before Islam, where paganism coexisted with Christianity and Judaism, so it would have made a lot of sense to distinguish between god and God. Perhaps it would help to read this article, written by a certified Arabic translator on the subject. After that, if you are still interested, there is an entire book devoted to this called “Arabic, Islam, and the Allah Lexicon : How Language Shapes Our Conception of God” (ed. John A. Morrow) that would probably satisfy you (I write “probably” because I haven’t read it myself, but I hear it is very good).
