I am surprised that people would consider the OP a troll. The servers in our parish are subject to a code of conduct and if they do not follow it they are asked to change or to leave the guild. I have seen a couple of people leaving because they did not like the rules anymore.

I think you are correct!
who cares if they are troll or not with suchlike post? The question deserves a full answer as anyone can be reading and if you hint at troll every time someone has only posted twice then the board would never have anyone staying long enough. Each one of us posted more than twice to get to where we are ‘today’ with the number of posts. What are you getting supicious for anyway because its not like its a bad press type of posting. Just give it a fair answer and quietly move on and leave it at that. Worry about it if the post appears to be anti catholic and anti Catholic and then alert the mods. Otherwise we just get nastily suspcious for whatever our reasons are and if by chance you happen to be right then no big deal is there. What have you won/scored by highlighting the post may be troll? Nothing.

But to state a poster is a troll because they have only posted twice in the whole board seems rather unfair to me because each of us will have only posted twice at some stage and by your style of judgement then we are all trolls. No, that is not a good enough reason to suspect someone a troll and even if they are what good is it to you or what bad is it to you that they have found an unlikely scenario and wanting (name removed by moderator)ut in it. Others will be reading our responses and working out if they should join in or not by fair hearings etc. Just answer the question or not. Sounds like you need more to do perhaps?

I half wonder if it’s a troll/spambot, since the OP has only posted twice in the whole forum.
I strongly disagree with the OP’s second post where the OP states that there is no more to the story than what the friend’s brother said. All conflicts have two sides even if both sides agree on the nature of the conflict. My disagreement with the OP’s logic does puzzle me.

On another note:

Moving from a more or less civil discussion on a matter relating to liturgy to a more heated discussion on trolls seems like something a troll would appreciate but could not expect to happen.

I am sorry but I did not suggest it and said “I think …”. First of all and having been involved with alter serving with my boys for many years, I find the story a little suspicious as well as what the OP himself said, second or even 3rd hand information. Knowing what I have seen in the need for alter servers and the lack there off, I highly doubt the story as presented. Usually there is a big need for older servers not and excess and the post come off as passing on of gossip than anything else.

👍

And some of us lurk for a while and do not post unless there is a question we can’t find an answer to, so it is likely that a first question may be interesting/different/provocative.

This is a pet peeve of mine but . . .

It seems that many users here at CAF misspell Altar Server as Alter Server.

They are called Altar Servers as they serve the priest at the Altar not at an Alter.

al·tar/ˈôltər/

Noun:
  • The table in a Christian church at which the bread and wine are consecrated in communion services.
  • A table or flat-topped block used as the focus for a religious ritual, esp. for making sacrifices or offerings to a deity.
al·ter/ˈôltər/

Verb:
  • Change or cause to change in character or composition, typically in a comparatively small but significant way.
  • Make structural changes to (a building).

You just sound like my altar ego. 🙂

👍 Thanks for that, it drives me crazy as well, especially when my servers come to me to validate their service hours and they misspell altar. :doh2:

True, otherwise we’ll be worshipping at the alter of God.

I tend to withhold judgement, IF the OP returns.

If is a hit and run…well, take that as you will.

On topic, I have never seen a code of conduct that states that the servers can’t date “a girl.”

From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal:

“107. The liturgical duties that are not proper to the Priest or the Deacon and are mentioned above (nos. 100-106) may also be entrusted by means of a liturgical blessing or a temporary deputation to suitable lay persons chosen by the pastor or rector of the church.[footnote 89: Cf. Pontifical Commission for the Interpretation of Legislative Texts, response to *dubium regarding can. 230 § 2: Acta Apostolicae Sedis 86 (1994), p. 541.] As to the function of serving the Priest at the altar, the norms established by the Bishop for his diocese should be observed.”

(From Roman Missal, English translation according to the third typical edition, approved for use in the dioceses of Australia, England and Wales, and Scotland, published by Catholic Truth Society, in 2010, ISBN 9781860827303, page 58.)

I know plenty of altar boys who date (as they are in late highschool or even college). The priest probably wanted to encourage a priestly vocational calling in the young man and saw dating as a hindrance to vocational discernment.

But to ban the young man from serving just because he was dating a girl seems…different, to say the least. I could see there be cause for concern if the young man was in seminary, as he shouldn’t be splitting himself from studying as a priest and dating a young woman. But not if he is just an altar server? I don’t know for sure, just some thoughts.
LaMusicaSenior:

Since it is unknown how old the altar server is, I agree 100% that if he is a college seminarian (say, between 18-21), he should not be dating at all. That is part of “discernment”. Several bishops and vocation directors forbid seminarians from dating, so if this altar server is a college seminarian (and the priest has firsthand knowledge that this is a serious girlfriend - which we don’t know) the priest may have dismissed him to avoid scandal, and notified his vocation director.

Although it is healthy for a man to have friendships with the opposite sex (several college seminaries are adjacent to co-ed college campuses), seminarians need to exhibit proper behavior, and not put themselves in certain situations. For example, a seminarian would probably make other plans the night of the college formal, but may go to say, a games night in the common area of a residence hall. Lunch after class in the school cafeteria with a group of male and female friends would be acceptable too.

I was an altar boy for many years myself, and I do agree for those in late high school or college that “healthy dating” is appropriate if one is not pursuing a priestly vocation. I think those of you reading this understand.

Several? I think every bishop in the country would expect his seminarians not to date, college or not.

If the individual in question were a college seminarian, presumably the issue of dating would have been worked out at a higher level (seminary rector, vocation director) than a pastor for whom the individual was serving Mass.

I think if a college seminarian is dating, there’s more issues there…
