I am planning on taking my husband on a special trip to Chattanooga for the weekend before his 25th birthday. I have been saving up my portion of the spending money for over a year to give him this special treat. We do have a separate travel savings account, but I didn’t think it was right to use that money without him knowing.

His parents are going to be coming from Ohio to join us, and it will be such a wonderful time! I was able to find a great package deal that put us up at a 4-star hotel and gave us some tickets to popular activities.

His parents and I also bought him a new laptop for his birthday gift. Now that he is writing full time I thought it would be a nice touch.

My question is this:
Would you be upset if your wife did this for you? I have been keeping it a secret, and I even had to tell him a lie 😊 to keep him from making plans for that weekend. I told him that he needed to stay in town, because I was going to be traveling for work until Saturday afternoon. He wanted to ask friends to go camping.

Was I wrong for lying to him about it? Would you be upset that I made these plans behind your back?

Nathan loves to travel, and honestly, he has wanted to go there for sometime. I picked activities that I knew he would like: Rock City, Ruby Falls, the IMAX, the aquarium. The computer and the trip only cost me $750.00 total, and his parents paid the other $750.00.

I am starting to feel a little guilty for spending that money without consulting him, but it was my spending money. We each get a certain amount of money each month to cover outings with friends, unnecessary clothes, lunch, etc. I just chose not to spend most of mine and save it for this trip.

Well, I am not male, but you need to calm down.

This lie is on the same moral plane with my “lies” to my kids about Santa Claus and the tooth fairy. You’re fine.

And you were totally responsible, and even self-sacrificing on the financial aspect of the trip! There is nothing for him to be upset about.

Have fun!

Thank you 🙂

You know…sometimes you get so excited to plan something and then I just think I am dealing with the excitement of it coming up finally! It is getting really hard to keep the secret!

Awww, I’m not male either (sorry) but what a lovely thing to do for your husband, especially as you must have made lots of sacrifices (even if little ones) along the way to afford it. You must love him a lot :). I don’t see how he could possibly be upset (but then that’s a female perspective). And telling little ‘white lies’ if you’re planning a surprise is quite normal, usually the ‘surprised’ party (hehe) just finds it funny & very touching.👍

Not a guy either, but your hubby is going to love the surprise! 😃

Way to go, girl! 👍

Sorry not a man either, but WOW you are so great!! I know he will be super happy about it…and definitely you are ok about the little lie…Besides if it’s eating you up that much then go to confession and let the Priest guide you…I bet he will say you are fine…
Oh let us know how it went!! I can’t wait to hear about his surprised look!! 😃 That is fantastic…Now that’s love girl!! 🙂

Thank you for your kind responses! This has been quite some time in the making.

We will be going from October 31-November 2, so it is still a little bit away, but I am just getting so excited! I am so bad at keeping secrets from him, so this has been quite the challenge. His parents have been good about it as well!

I think I am going to stop by the confessional this weekend. I usually only go once a month for the first weekend, but it is bothering more about lying than I thought it would!

Well, I AM a guy and I think that you are a special wife! He will love it.

My wife did something similar on our 10th anniversary. I came home from a long day of work thinking that we were going to a steakhouse here in Houston to celebrate. The in-laws were at the house to babysit the boys and it was going to be just the two of us. Well, as we were driving to the restaurant, we were approaching Interstate 10 and my wife told me that we should go ahead and take the exit for the freeway. I was thinking that she was a bit loony since that wasn’t even a possible way to get the restaurant that we had reservations for. As I started to gently explain to her who it is between us that was driving, she dropped the bombshell on me - we had reservations at a steakhouse in San Antonio! She had set up an entire weekend for us completely unbeknownst to me. I was stunned and absolutely loved it! It is still one of our most memorable anniversaries.

So relax and prepare yourself for the look on his face when he realizes what is going on. You’ll remember it for the rest of your life!

Peace

Tim

You are so sweet!! 😃 OMG!! How romantic!! I am a hopeless romantic, and every time I try to do stuff like this, my honey catches me!! I am horrible at keeping secrets and I start giggling like a dork when I am trying to do “surprises” and I end up getting caught…😦 I know lame!! Either that or would get no participation from my honey’s mother, we don’t get a long very well…but anyhow, and I end up getting caught…even though he is still surprised you know, it would have been so much better if I would have been able to pull it through till the end you know?! But you are doing a great job!! He will love it!! 😃

I am a guy, too, and I think this is awesome. I wouldn’t be upset at all! God bless you!!!

GratefulDad, thinks he will be one, grateful husband after all is said and done.😉

I think ya did good. I like Rock City, especially the rub a dub dub 3 men a tub display, and being able to see 7 states from Lookout Mountain. Debbie and I stopped there on our Honeymoon, we were on our way to Gatlinburg. It was cold the day were were there brrrrrrr.

Is he gonna bring the laptop??

He doesn’t have it yet! We are going to give it to him at dinner that Friday night.

Bama, I didn’t realize you could see that many states! I am praying for good weather while we are there! :gopray2:

I wouldnt give him the laptop till *after *ya got back from the trip LOL.

Yes wait for the laptop until after words…Then he might be more interested in exploring his new toy rather than paying attention to the beautiful scenery, that gave him his great gifts, YOU!!! 😉

hmm so maybe we will give it to him on Sunday at brunch right before we say good bye to his parents and head back to Atlanta.

I hadn’t thought about him wanting to play with it! Men and their technology! 😉

I am telling you!! That is a wise decision!! 😃 Every time I give mine a gadget like that, oh man do I regret it!! Then he doesn’t pay attention to anything anyone is saying nor giving him!! It’s like hello party’s not over yet!!! 😦 lol…

I got a special Christmas present for my DH once… tickets to see the Broncos thrash the Raiders, a few days after Christmas. I had to buy them from an online scalper. The surprise was ruined, but it was just fine. Read on.

I got home from shopping one day after I bought the tickets, to be greeted by a BIG hug and a very happy hubby. Turns out the ticket agent had discovered that where we were sitting wouldn’t give us much of a view, so she called offering a change to better (and cheaper!) seats, and DH took the call.

The only difference was that the surprise was earlier than planned. “Man proposes; God disposes.”

I love Orogeny’s story!

Have a lovely time, Mrs. Sears!

God bless,

Ruthie

Yes, I agree, make the gift of the laptop the desert for this great surprise.

I think what you are doing here is wonderful. The lie you told was not one intended to deceive, but to preserve the surprise. Venial sin at best.

But seriously, this sounds like such a wonder thing. Have fun and may God bless you both.

This is perfect - well done!!! I agree - give him the laptop right before you take the trip home - he’ll be excited all the way…

Sending blessings your way!

Well done - we all love surprises, just like children…
