Greetings everyone,

I would like to know if anyone can recommend a book that deals specifically with male spirituality written by an orthodox Catholic. I’ve seen some books written on this subject and the emasculation of today’s Christianity, but mostly by Protestant authors. I was recommended a book by Fr. Richard Rohr, but to my disappointment, I found out that this priest is quite heterodox in his views. I’m trying to reach out to Catholic men in the neighborhood (who usually don’t attend Mass) who feel that being a practicing Catholic is only in the domain of women.
Does anyone have recommendations?

don’t know of a book off hand although DH who is not big into spiritual reading is devouring Fr. Groeschel’s books

interesting that a Church who has received so much criticism for being patriarchal, ignoring needs of women and treating them as second class citizens, allowing male theology and priesthood and hierarchy to rule and dominate women, is also at the very same time perceived as “for women only” and a woman-centered Church. Are we all talking about the same Church?
 
I’ve never read any of his books, and I’d think his stuff is more geared toward fathers, but from his radio show I’d say Steve Woods has got a pretty good idea of what it means to be a catholic man. Check out www.dads.org.

Many of the great spiritual writers were men. Some of the great spiritual classics are very tough books. The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis is rather tough-- he’s always advocating that we stop complaining and bear our crosses. L. Scupoli’s Spiritual Combat is also a very good short book. It leverages the imagery of warfare to relate to the spiritual life.

There is something simple and austere about both books.

Perhaps there are other more modern books that would be good. There are some theological treatises on spirituality which may be helpful, if he thinks something like that would be more ‘masculine.’ The Three Ages of the Interior Life is like a textbook, but is very thorough (and quite Dominican).

Perhaps something from St. Francis de Sales would be good-- you’ll have to read an Introduction to the Devout Life and try to see whether that seems masculine enough for you.

I have a number of dvd’s by Father Corapi which are great but I wasn’t aware he had written any books. I couldn’t see anything on his website written by him. If you can tell me what he has written I would be interested in getting them.
 
I wasn’t able to find any books by Fr. Corapi, either. Sorry! Only, as you said… dvd’s, cd’s, and audio materials.

I guess I made an assumption… based on the fact that Fr. Corapi is so prolific, in his teaching… that he would also have books!😊
