Man bags

Joking aside, this touches upon the larger issue of today’s society emasculating men.
Didn’t Jesus instruct His disciples to not carry their PURSES with them in Luke? You can’t instruct someone to not *take *a purse unless they already *have *a purse. 😉 And then later, He instructed them *to *carry their purses with them.

In other words, it’s not just a “today’s men” issue.

Manbags are not unmanly. Men have used pouches, purses, satchels, bags, etc forever.

Besides, what’s a guy - like my hubby - to do when he needs to carry certain things with him at all times? (Epi-pen, EMS field guides, gloves, wallet, keys, etc.) Eventually you just run out of pocket room. 🤷

I think ladies need to realize that what works for women will not necessarily work for men. Us men don’t always do the logical thing; in fact, we don’t do the logical thing most of the time, and we’re darn proud of it. We’re not your best girlfriends. You can train us the best you can, but when you’re at work or away, we’re still going to do stupid guy things.

As for your husband in this particular case, he could easily carry his stuff in a briefcase.

I’m confused. No one here has said that men should carry them. Or that women prefer men who carry them. Or that women want men to be their girlfriends. I think you’re blowing this waaaay out of proportion.

I think the thing here is that if a man prefers to carry a man bag, what’s the big deal? Why should he be mocked (as you seem to be doing)?

Briefcases are clumsy, awkward, and aren’t able to be carried with the same ease that a purse like object can be carried. You know - swinging it into an ambulance at the last minute? Fishing through it for a pair of gloves? Toting it around with your epi-pen inside while doing yardwork? Trying to unlatch it to use a pistol? Nah.

Besides, a briefcase is still just a rigid, big “guy” purse.

I did not mean to mock. If I came off sounding that way, I apologize. However, I do think that a “man bag” is an unmanly accessory.

Like I said, it’s a guy thing. Just as women complain that men do not understand them, it cuts both ways. Take this for instance. If you asked the host at a dinner party something like, “Where did you get that chicken?” If the host is a man, he would say the local supermarket. If the host is a woman, she’s likely to say, “What’s wrong with it?” See what I mean?

Being practical makes you no less ‘a guy’.
I agree with this - since when has making sense and being practical been a non-guy thing to do?? 🤷

Look - I’m not suggesting a Prada bag with shiny gold buckles. But something rugged and simple that suites the man’s personality and needs is fine.

Ok - this just in - my husband dumped all over this one maxpedition.com/store/pc/FATBOY-S-TYPE-VERSIPACK-4p49.htm - I won’t tell you what he said lest I offend a previous poster. 😉

Nonetheless - I wish he would carry SOMETHING other than the “man purse coat”.

I don’t know if this is true for guys (or most people, in general), but it’s been my experience that the bigger the bag, the more junk it gets filled with. I carry a tiny little purse now, that holds a small change purse, a small zippered credit card wallet, and my keys. My husband has a money clip (is that old fashioned, or what? He’s the only guy in his 20s, that I know of, who carries a money clip 😃 ), a cell phone, and keys that he keeps in his pockets.

The less space, the less junk. 😛

Of course, I have a pretty big diaper bag that I haul around with me, too. But that carries diapers, wipes, a brush, and 2-3 changes of clothes per child. I used to make it my “purse,” too, but decided that I’d rather leave the big bag in the car and take a tiny purse with me into places.

As a guy, I’d be perfectly fine with carrying a diaper bag, so long as there’s a baby to go along with it.

Well there’s always the option of a kilt & a sporran. Nothing looks more manly than a kilt!

I have become a convert, not in the religious sense, rather a convert to carrying a man bag.

All right, you can stop laughing and jeering now. It is all about stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Wallet, checkbook, calculator, small flashlight, phone, notepad, pens, compass, eyedrops, etc., etc. It is more stuff than I want to try to jam in my pockets. And pockets seem to be shrinking, even as stuff is waxing.
Most of that stuff you can leave in your truck. The rest should be built in to the multi-purpose knife that rests in a leather holster on your belt. Anything left over can be rolled up in your t-shirt sleeve next to your smokes.

The only bags you need should be on your horse or your Harley. :tiphat:

It’s pretty common to see guys with messenger bags that are big enough to fit a laptop. Briefcases too, but those don’t look very comfortable.

these are made pocket sized for a reason.
checkbook
ditch the check book for a check card which will fit in your wallet that fits in your pocket
calculator
also available wallet size
small flashlight
Get one that fits on your keychain. Keep your keychain in your right front pocket
Keep in your left front pocket or get one of those cases you can wear at your waist.
notepad, pens
Use the Sarah Palin method
Yea, right. A man that carries a purse needs a compass:rolleyes:
left front pocket, there’s still room for chapstick, too.

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where they kept saying “not that there’s anything wrong with it”. Well I’ll go ahead and tell you what they won’t.

There’s something wrong with it.

And the Seinfeld episode I’m thinking of wasn’t the one about the “manbag” either.

I’ll be honest. If I were dating (I’m not, I’m engaged) I’d be a bit turned off by a man carrying a “man bag”. I mean, as a student or office worker to carry books or a laptop to work, that’s fine with me.

But I just don’t like the idea of a guy carrying a bag for his wallet and other items. Perhaps it’s generational? I’m 23.

If my fiance decided he wanted to carry a bag I’d think he was crazy! He’s a buff hockey player. Not the type to carry around a purse I’m sure. Although he is kind enough to hold mine on occasion 🙂 And if he ever has too much to carry I just put it in my purse. So it works out.

I’m sure this is just based on personal preference. There’s no right or wrong answer.

I am flabbeergasted. Utterly flabbergasted. And transmogrified.

Many man skirts do not even have pockets. And the stuff has to go somewhere.

Seriously, though, to paraphrase Sigmund Freud, “Sometimes a bag is just a bag.”

It just a carryall, not a symbol of gender preference.

And today, I purchased a new wallet, to match the bag. Lately, I seem to have strange urges to accessorize.

The bag in question is heavy duty black ripstop nylon, with multiple zippered compartments, and a shoulder strap. It is made by Eagle Creek, which markets it as a guide bag. You can see it at the manufacturer’s website:

No. It is not a purse.
Yes, that is a purse, albeit a very ugly one. 😛
This is my husband’s “briefcase” messenger bag…

That is acceptable as is this. a traditional briefcase is an excellent choice. Murses, man bags etc are to me very silly. If it won’t fit into your pocket or jacket for most daily activities, then you probably shouldn’t be carrying it. Oh, btw, only Inidiana Jones can pull off a satchel.

I can’t speak for the OP, but sorry ladies, you’re not going to get this guy to carry a “man bag,” “murse,” or whatever else you want to call it. Brad Paisley was absolutely right when he sang “I’m Still a Guy.” Seriously.
no man bag… Ever, they are unmanly!!
thank goodness there may be some men left that I’ll find acceptable to date my daughters! I’m making a mental note to put this in my “do’s and don’ts” of datings for my girls. No guys carrying “murses” are allowed across the threshold! 😛

One of those man bags looks like an old purse of mine, except mine had a floral print.

What is wrong with the worn look of a wallet outline on a guys pocket? I like that spot on my husbands tush! 😉

My hubbie looks great in his kilt too! I think its his hairy legs. It could also be the sgian dubh that keeps things a bit more masculine.

This is a great kilt for the guy who needs to carry a few things.
