FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A man carried a gun into a North Carolina church, but was calmly disarmed and prayed with the pastor, according to a report.
The Fayetteville Observer reported that it happened as an unidentified man walked into Heal the Land Outreach Ministries in Fayetteville at about 11:40 p.m. during a New Year’s Eve service.
Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Wright was delivering a sermon to about 60 people, according to the paper.
The man was holding the rifle pointed up in one hand and an ammunition clip in the other, according to Wright.
Wright said he asked the man if he could help him. The unidentified stranger was reportedly calm as Wright took the weapon from him and had four deacons disarm him.

The man started crying as Wright began praying for him, according to reports. Wright said the stranger asked for salvation and “gave his life to Christ.”
Police arrived and were planning on taking the man to a mental health facility.
Scary. The man has problems and the first thing he does is grab a gun and go to a public place. This is becoming an epidemic anymore. A person is depressed and they immediately want to kill someone. I hope this never happens in my church! Thank goodness for that quick-thinking pastor that managed to talk him down.

Scary to me that the man even had access to a gun. Maybe churches are going to need to start displaying those opt out signs on their doors as some businesses do in open carry states that do not want guns in their establishments.

Yep. The man would have read that sign and turned around.

Well then maybe churches need to start hiring guards at the doors as well and putting in place security check points.
There are armed ushers at my parish every week, I can tell you that.

Well done, pastor! Perhaps his military experience helped, but I’m sure it was his faith that carried him through. The man was crying for help and the pastor answered him. The fact that he willingly went to the medical center and the pastor is not pressing charges is very hopeful. The congregation says they will baptize him if he returns. Isn’t this what Jesus would do?

Yes, it’s scary. Yes, there should be another way. We abandoned the mentally ill to the streets long ago. Our veterans aren’t treated much better. Here was a man with PTSD in an area with very poor VA services (North Carolina). He was wrong for what he did, but we are wrong as a country for not providing resources for the mentally ill. Our jails are full of mentally ill people in there for relatively minor crimes and not getting proper treatment. We should be ashamed of ourselves for abandoning people.

Really? Are they that worried about violence?
Nope. It’s called being prepared. A good number of members carry concealed as well. People who should be worried about violence are those that can’t defend themselves. Those that can, don’t have to worry.

Armed ushers as in concealed weapons or as in holding a gun in their hands as people come in. If the later, I could imagine that putting a good number of people off.

Are you not American? Concealed. Nobody caries guns like that, even in places where it’s legal.
