Set off how?
Let’s face it, there have been all kinds of events involving arson, guns, knife threats at churches (not simply Catholic Churches either) as well as events involving schools, malls, concerts, i.e. public locales.
In the church events 99 times out of 100 it has been a person who has a variety of issues, often but not always religious ones, and too often it’s been ‘copycat’ after other actions. Sadly sometimes the perpetrator dies in carrying things out and we never really know why it happened to begin with.
Separate from this entire issue, whether it’s attacks carried out on churches or other places, is a growing consensus among many people that anti religious attacks of all kinds are escalating throughout the US and the world, again for a variety of reasons. I think that’s one reason Father Hellman has the current 40 days of prayer against the demonic forces which are certainly having an effect on ALL evils in the world today.
But whether a person feels that attacks on churches are ‘same old same old’, meaning that they will always take place just as they will any time or any place some determined person wishes to commit mayhem, and that we need not have any particular worries or cares that this indicates a rise in anti religious attitudes that can result in something infinitely worse in time, or that the gradual rise is itself an indication that something worse is almost certainly on the way, I believe we can all agree that any violence of this type is to be deprecated, and that prayer for all is the best thing.
Or as St Pio says, Pray, hope, and don’t worry, and St. John Paul II says, Be not afraid. . .and as St. Peter said, “The devil is prowling searching for souls to destroy. Resist him, solid in the faith.”
