Does anyone have a good response to the common atheist accusation that religion was created by mankind either to control the masses or lessen the fear of death
I just thought of something that hits upon the old atheist’s standby that “man created God” and not the other way around. Dennis Prager wrote a very, very interesting essay called “Judaism’s Sexual Revolution: Why Judaism (and then Christianity) Rejected Homosexuality”

The gist of the essay is that the Jewish God was such an innovation, and so contrary to the base natures of all societies that there is no way He was “created” by man. No man would create such a restrictive God Who’s rules (in fact, Commandments) are anathema to every man’s savage desires. A God which man is constantly rebelling against, like an unruly child that constantly threatens to run away from home, and sometimes does. This strange and unique God could only have come from God Himself, not us. If we could make a God in our image, it would not resemble the God of the Bible.

Does anyone recall that old quote or statement from either a Pope or other high ranking church official, I believe it was in the late 1800s, but not sure, when they said something to the effect of “This God/religion has been very good for us”?

Im sorry, it was actually Pope Leo that said…

“How well we know what a profitable superstition this fable of Christ has been for us and our predecessors.”

Pope Leo didn’t say that. It comes from an anti-Catholic play called “The Pageant of the Popes,” which was written by an ex-Catholic Anglican priest named John Bale. Quote:
For on a time when a cardinall Bembus did move a question out of the Gospell, the Pope gave him a very contemptuous answer saying: All ages can testifie enough howe profitable that fable of Christe hath ben to us and our companie.
So yeah, Pope Leo calling Christ a myth is nothing more than bunk. Here’s a professionally written article: tektonics.org/lp/popeleox.php
