Yep, there is now a comic about our Pope Benedict XVI. You can get a free copy at the World Youth Day 2011 August 16-21 in Madrid, and perhaps somwhere else šŸ™‚ It got the name Habemus Papam and it is made as an introduction to who the pope is for thoose that donā€™t know much about him. The people behind this has apparently also made a manga about Paul the apostle and another one about Judith from the Old Testament.

An interview with one of the producers of this manga comic is posted on the official website for World Youth Day 2011.
The Manga comic entitled ā€œHabemus Papamā€ was written by Gabrielle Gniewek, a student at John Paul the Great University (JP Catholic) in San Diego, California. JP Catholic was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to finding ways to bring Christ into popular culture using new forms of mass media. Students at JP Catholic train in emerging media.

A: The point of Habemus Papam! is to introduce Pope Benedict XVI to those who may not know much about him, except that he is the leader of the Catholic Church. This short story captures different moments throughout the Holy Fatherā€™s life ā€“ specifically as a cardinal working with the late Pope John Paul II, and culminating in the moments leading up to his election as Bishop of Rome. The story also shows how he grows into his role as pope.

Hi.
I donā€™t normally post in forums but I felt a pretty strong urge to speak about how strange and surreal this is to me as someone who, long ago, once read Manga regularly.

I can understand the need to introduce faith into popular entertainment media, but the character attributes normally associated with characters in traditional manga are at such great odds with the character attributes of the Pope that it will be a jarring disconnect for readers.

In addition readers are used to dramatic or action packed scenes in their manga - it is the whole reason they read it. I think that a manga about the pope wont have any action and probably not much drama.

I really think that this may be a futile effort and perhaps that money might be spent elsewhere to greater effect.

you know what, it may work , You know many devoted Catholics will get it because of who he is and you know the evangelicals who disagree with
will get it to pick and point at what they can use against his teachings . Also lets not forget about the ingrate atheist who would love nothing more then to laugh at the Pope and make fun of his comic . This may be a home run if you look at it that way .

You all do know that JPII had his own Marvel comic, right?

Yes, I was just about to post that. But arenā€™t manga and comics different?

The 1983 Marvel comic is still available through normal second hand channels.
 
As far as i know manga is the style. JPII was done in the american drawing way.
