Hi,

As a catholic how are we to discern non-denominational or other non catholic churches claiming to have manifestations of the Holy Spirit. I mean Gold dust falling from the sky,
bread appearing out of nowhere or even these so called films by Darren Wilson where he claims the Holy Spirit is the one directing the movie? I find it all bizarre but was wondering how a catholic should discern these things e.g.: of God? is it demonic or just plain human manipulation?
Thanks

I think anytime people come to Jesus and/or are giving God glory, that is a good thing.

It’s the formation that can be bad.

I’ve heard stories about protestant missionaries preaching gospel in remote areas of the world where it is raining cats and dogs all around them, but they don’t get a drop of water on them as they praise God. I have no reason to doubt it or think it’s demonic or anything like that. Where there are 2 or more in His name, there He is in the midst of them. He can straighten them out doctrinally, later.

Sometimes it is human manipulation- google Peter Popoff

The Church (that is, the Catholic Church) doesn’t have exclusive access to the Holy Spirit, so it’s possible. Whether or not each case is a true manifestation is the question.

I heard a Trappist monk explain the criteria for discernment this way: “Ask yourself, ‘Does this sound like love?’ If it does, it may be of God. If not, it can’t be of God.”

I just don’t believe stories. It’s like telephone, with the supernatural claim factor. The Rain story is apt, because the Bible uses a rain analogy in the opposite way:

Matt5: 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

Phony. I’ve seen Hindu “mystics” perform the same trick
bread appearing out of nowhere
Illusion, like any street magician
or even these so called films by Darren Wilson where he claims the Holy Spirit is the one directing the movie?
Yeah, ok.

Most human, sometimes outright manipulative. Few demonic.

Yes, the Holy Spirit is available in other churches. However, I don’t bother trying to discern things that I don’t need to know about. I don’t have that kind of knowledge, anyway.

I quote this often here in rainy Ireland… 😉
