Needing some help on this one.

Was taught in bible study the other day that the Manna which came down from heaven was actually bug “honeydew” (poo poo), and that there is NO jar of the Manna in the Ark and that the ark does not even exist anymore.

Been searching the net for info on this and am coming up empty…

Can anyone help with this?, sources very important on this.

Thanks and God bless

Me thinks your school teacher was making stuff up in order to reduce the miricle of bread from heaven into something they can personally process.

crazzeto,I soooooooo agree with you. Sadly the “teacher” is the Monsignor(sp) and the pastor at the parish where we are taking this study course.

I am trying to find OFFICIAL Church documents concering this. Would love to have some insight as to what the ECF had to say as well.

Well, as with so many difficult concepts in the Old Testament, “ya probably had to be there” to understand; doubt the Monsignor was. It’s sad he resorted to dumbing down for the class, you all should be insulted.

I’d ask the Monsignor to point you toward his sources. I have NEVER heard such a silly thing before in my life. 😦

That theory has been around for many years. It came from a time when cheap documentaries used to come up with pseudo scientific reasons to explain what were actually out and out miracles of the Bible. So they made out that there was some natural phenomenon that explained what happened but that was more incredible to believe than say a miracle to a non believer.

Common sense will tell you that those bugs could not produce enough ‘manna’ to eat for thousands of people each day even if that desert was decked out with trees like at the Amazon forest stretching out for kilometres. I’d like to see whoever proposed that theory collect enough of the bug stuff to feed even one person a day.

It is presented in the Scriptures as a daily gift from God to the Israelites, a miracle.

Revelation 11:19 suggests that the Ark of the Covenant is in Heaven. Makes a lot more sense than God allowing it to have been desecrated by armies that invaded Israel.

Manna is a myth that is meant to show God’s provision. There is no reason to believe the manna story, especially considering that the biblical texts themselves say that sacrifices were offered the entire time in the desert (Numbers)- to offer sacrifices, there had to have been plenty of cattle. Also, other sections allude to livestock- Exodus 9 tells us they took all their livestock with them. So, for the Israelites to have no food, we would have to believe that they were horrible shepherds (history says they weren’t) and could only breed enough livestock to perform their sacrifices.

And I suppose the multiplication of the loaves and fishes was a miracle of sharing?

Why not tell a true story about God’s provision instead? And if the manna “story” is just a myth, does that mean Jesus’ appropriation of it in John 6 implies that the Eucharist is a similar myth?

Right, they had all these animals (formerly worshiped, back in Egypt) and God demanded they be sacrificed to Him regularly. Perhaps the Israelites weren’t so keen on that, nor on eating these animals.

There was a jar of manna placed in the Ark, but the whereabouts of the Ark are unknown today.

The bug droppings would most certainly have been miraculous if, for some reason, the droppings on Sunday through Thursday became spoiled the next day, but the droppings on Friday remained good through Saturday, as Exodus says was the case.

But no, I think the bug droppings theory is bull droppings.

There is another theory that it is the bird poo. But it also lacks the miraculous aspects of breeding worms six days and not the seventh. Some people just refuse to believe God.

I hope is was NOT another Catholic?

Exod.16: [31] Now the house of Israel called its name manna; it was like coriander seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey…[33] And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar, and put an omer of manna in it, and place it before the LORD, to be kept throughout your generations.” [35] And the people of Israel ate the manna forty years, till they came to a habitable land; they ate the manna, till they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

Num.11: [6] but now our strength is dried up, and there is nothing at all but this manna to look at." [7] Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium. [9] When the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell with it.

Deut.8: 1.[3] And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know; that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but that man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD. 2.[16] who fed you in the wilderness with manna which your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

4Ezra.1: [19] I pitied your groanings and gave you manna for food; you ate the bread of angels.

It is no less a miracle just because a natural explanation is discovered.
The miracle is not how it was created but that it was there when the Israelites needed it most.

Go with Love, Go with God
Yet another attempt to secularize what manna is… Makes me sad that people today are so ready to look for solutions such as these, in order to disbelieve that God might really provide the Israelites bread.

if the source is so important why don’t you ask the (expletive deleted) teaching your class? he is of course endowed by God with authority to make such statements and can prove it to you

There are all sorts of explanations for everything. However, the question remains as to what the significance of that explanation is. A lot of people look for “scientific” explanations as a way to displace religion. One needs to learn to read the various books of the Bible and understand the culture and language of the time is completely different to that of today. One must ask “How would the people of that time understood this text?”

My classical case-study is the Genesis creation story. We can distil it and understand the following points:

1.) God created the universe.
2.) Man sinned against God.
3.) Because of man’s sin, we have suffering.

And in the light of the New Testament we can add:

4.) Man needs salvation.
5.) Man needs a saviour.
6.) Jesus is the new Adam.

Like I said to the president of the Atheist League at my university:

One cannot read a translation of a 2,000-year old (or so) Greek text, take everything literally with a 21st century mindset and understand it. You need to remember that you’re reading a translation, which means that we are reading what the translator thinks that the text says. You also need to remember that the original text is anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 years old depending what you are reading, and that the people of that time would have understood what the author was trying to say. There would have been many cultural markers in the original language which would have provided the nuances of meaning. To take every single verse in the Bible literally is just sheer stupidity. Some books were of history, mythology, law, prayers, poetry, teaching, morality, wisdom, etc. It would be absurd to read a book of poetry or prayers as a history text, just as we would not read an encyclopaedia today as music.

Addenum (I didn’t say this on the day, but this is what I came up with upon reflection):

Which is why we need to approach the Bible using the Magesterium of the Universal Church in order to correctly interpret it’s meaning. It’s the same with any number of books. I can read a book of law, but I would need a lawyer in order to correctly interpret it in context with any other relevant laws.

His response was:

Yes, well that’s the problem there are so many interpretations isn’t there?

Christ uses the manna as the type and symbol of the Eucharistic food, which is true “bread from heaven”, and “bread of life”, i.e., life-giving bread, in a far higher sense than the manna of old (John 6). St. Paul in calling the manna “spiritual food” (1 Corinthians 10:3), alludes to its symbolical significance with regard to the Eucharist as much as to its miraculous character. Hence the manna has always been a common Eucharistic symbol in Christian art and liturgy. In Apocalypse 2:17, the manna stands as the symbol of the happiness of heaven.
