In the Extraordinary Form, if all of the Hosts are used in the ciborium, how is the ciborium purified? Is water poured in it before the first ablution of the chalice?
Fr.,The same way it’s always been done; over the corporal, consume any large particles, some water, the priest consumes the water, and it is dried with the purificator.
It need not necessarily be done “before the chalice” though, if you meant that clause to be a part of the question.
The preference is to do it at the credence table insofar as possible. It may de done at the altar.
I don’t have any instructions in front of me, but I’m trying to remember from my altar server days… As I recall, I think I’ve seen the priest hold the ciborium out for the server to pour wine into, just as he normally would with the chalice. After swishing the wine around in the ciborium, the priest then poured it himself from the ciborium into the chalice. He then proceeded with the purification of the chalice as usual. In the Extraordinary Form, if all of the Hosts are used in the ciborium, how is the ciborium purified? Yes, that’s what I thought too. A priest asked me about it last Wednesday, and when I told him exactly the same thing you just described, he told me it didn’t seem correct to pour wine into the ciborium since the Precious Blood had never been in the ciborium. His response seemed irrelevant to me, but I didn’t have an educated rebuttal for him.I don’t have any instructions in front of me, but I’m trying to remember from my altar server days… As I recall, I think I’ve seen the priest hold the ciborium out for the server to pour wine into, just as he normally would with the chalice. I always have both ablutions (wine and wine/water) poured into the ciborium, and then pour each respective ablution into the chalice, from which they are consumed. I purify my fingers over the ciborium for the second ablution. There is no problem pouring wine into the ciborium.Yes, that’s what I thought too. So there would be no problem in doing it the way cam100 and I thought?I always have both ablutions (wine and wine/water) poured into the ciborium, and then pour each respective ablution into the chalice, from which they are consumed. God bless,

A nice bit of reading might be O’Keefe Notes on the Rubrics of the Roman Ritual.(p.377) Some have changed slightly since his time, and greater weight has been given to the last options, but they are largely the same.In the Extraordinary Form, if all of the Hosts are used in the ciborium, how is the ciborium purified?
